ALP Rejects Cabinet Sub Committee for WPP Probe

ALP Rejects Cabinet Sub Committee for WPP ProbeAntigua St. John’s - The opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) has rejected as “farcical” the government’s appointment of an inter-Cabinet committee to look into a call for a public inquiry into the Wadadli Power Plant (WPP) controversy.

ALP Chairman, Gaston Browne said he received a response from acting Prime Minister Harold Lovell, to a letter he penned to Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, requesting that the government mounts either an independent investigation or a commission of inquiry into the controversial purchase of Chinese-built and financed power plant.

Speaking on the ALP’s radio programme, Insight, Browne said the government appears to be softening in its stance regarding the issue as it has replied formally to his letter, something it had not done in the past.

However, the ALP Chairman described the appointment of the committee that comprises Labour Minister Senator Dr. Errol Cort, Education Minister Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro and Lovell as, perhaps, a delaying tactic, but that the desire of the ALP is for a full inquiry.

“I believe that there is unanimity for the request for an inquiry and if the government fails to satisfy our request for an inquiry, then it does so at its own peril,” he stated.

He said much is at stake for the United Progressive Party (UPP) Administration as its own reputation is on the line.

“The reality is the UPP has everything to lose, including their integrity and support of the electorate. This issue now transcends the argument of new and old, but now it is at the heart of the governing principles of transparency and accountability. Now, if the UPP fails to be transparent and to account to the nation with some independent mechanism, preferably a commission of inquiry, they will confirm to the nation that they indeed have something to hide. This will then crystallize the fact that we are not only being governed by an incompetent government, but we are also being governed by a corrupt one,” Browne stated.

Browne said the letter from Lovell has been turned over to ALP’s Political Leader Lester Bird and other party officials. He is also urging party supporters to “ready” themselves for what is likely to be a series of protest actions against the government on the issue.

The ALP chairman also called on his colleagues to unite around this issue, noting that this was not a time for competition.

“Competition will come at another time, perhaps later this year when we have our convention, but this is a time to seize the opportunity that would be created by the UPP’s blundering of this issue,” he urged.

Programme host and parliamentarian, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, himself an attorney, said the setting up of the committee is “farcical in the extreme”.

“What absolute foolishness! To do what? Just to put their thoughts together and to toe the line,” he declared.

Benjamin also had strong words for two political analysts, Arvel Grant and Peter Wickham, for statements made on Observer Radio’s Big Issues programme where they commended the government for releasing documents about the WPP with four critical pages missing, calling it an example of a transparent government. He accused them of seeking to distort the truth and for having little regard for the intelligence of Antiguans and Barbudans.

Bird added his voice to the discussion, saying that it is inconceivable that the committee would return with a recommendation contrary to that stated publicly by Spencer.

Gaston is a true Leader. When they think they have him backed into a corner for the kill he skilfully slips out. That is the mettle of a real Leader. Run with WPP Gaston and leave Molwyn and the others behind with their old argument.

Cool Ruler, since the PM has declared anyone with a view contrary to his unpatriotic, you have to wonder if Arvel got one of those millennium citizenship. Those citizenship entail a provision where they can be revoked if the recipient is judged by the minister (currently the PM) as unpatriotic. This may explain why Arvel needs to defend the WPP and the current government. Another reason for defending of the government was also evident on that proposal or bill he allegedly sent the UPP with fees as a political consultant. Wasn't it this conflict why he was (allegedly) fired by Observer?

As far as deporting persons for speaking out, it is this government who a court found illegally deported Lennox Linton and had to award Linton some 20K in tax payers dollars (see www.caribarena.com/antigua/news/latest/3846-journalist-defeats-antiguan-govt-in-court.html)

Gaston has been truthful with the power plant allegations. Up to now he has not said the engines are old and non of you can get him to say that. Gaston has and always will be relevant as a politician and do not need any power plant issue to make him relevant unlike some who have an obsession with it. Gaston has now moved this issue to the next level which all of you have failed to achieve after eight months. Gaston is the best. Hatred and envy will get you, his detractors no where. Go Gaston.

young analyst the said gentlemen are known political **. The words coming from Arvel now show him up as bought and paid. Before 2004 he was all for transparency and accountability, now its optional. As for Wickham who is satsfied with the Antiguan government being secretive, here is what he has to say about Dominica March 20, 2012:
Quote:
Peter Wickham Regional Pollster Peter Wickham wants the Dominica government to use its parliamentary strength and the large chunk of political support it obtained from the electorate in the 2009 general election to change “outdated” laws, and work towards greater transparency. www.dominica-weekly.com/news/change-dual-citizenship-law-%E2%80%93-wickham/

Skyewill, do you understand the function of a Cabinet? They serve at the convenience of the PM. In our system they cannot go against the PM unless they are prepared to be fired. The PM has already publicly stated there is no need for a commission of inquiry. His cabinet cannot say anything contrary because they would then be breaking from the concept of speaking with one voice (PM a member saying one thing, others saying another).

This is NOT the Gaston Show Alone

#10 Guest » 2012-07-11 08:40

Somebody please tell me where this Gaston has been for the last 8 mths? I guess when your popularity in the Party has gone to zero, you are called out daily by the Lone Wolf because of your "waiting on proof that the engines are old" & a serious dose of medication, this new Gaston has emerged. I don't want to say too late Mr Brown, but to come out as if you have been the flag bearer for truth over this issue is just a tad bit late & quite an eye opener for us all. I guess it does xxx to sleep, eat, and xxxxnd the xxxxy. Mr joseph & Mr Yearwood who spearheaded the power plant issue didn't make Baldwin there xxd xxxxw & didn't get the results you are getting but, then again, Men Of Integrity don't sell their souls to the devil. A man with your ego would want to believe that YOU & YOU alone got this farce of a Sub committee started, my opinion is that the UPP had no choice, the public pressure, daily proof from Molwyn & Robin, The Lone Wolf pickets, all played a major role in Baldwins decision.

I am so fed up with this tick trying to stay relevant. First of all it is not your letter, you idiot as you are you wrote on behalf of ALP, secondly how are you NOW so interested in the WPP scandal? Are you now saying the members of ALP have shown you irrefutable evidence? Are you not the same person that said on Observer that persons were PAID to spread propaganda that the engines were old? Am I too believe now from your change of heart and you now trying to be the loudest voice in this call for an enquiry, that you are one of the persons that got paid? PAPA it has been 13 years that you left us and I now know who persons you meant to keep out of our party. GASTON I WILL SAY IT AGAIN GO KICK ROCKS.

What if they do?

#8 Skyewill » 2012-07-11 07:31

Bird added his voice to the discussion, saying that it is inconceivable that the committee would return with a recommendation contrary to that stated publicly by Spencer. What if they do? In fact there is a 33% chance that 1 of them will recommend and independent inquiry. In fact they must recommend an inquiry in order to save the UPP or what is left of that person’s reputation if they want to stay in politics. WPP wrong or right is in too much controversy to ignore so a study is needed no matter what just to clear the air.

#7 young analyst » 2012-07-11 07:22

these analyst must had been to the fete lol (lots of liquor) and had a bit to much to drink before they spoke. How can releasing a document with pages missing being deemed as transparent, its best they didnt hand over any document at all. thats sounds to me like they are really hiding something. Ifthe government made the decision to send out a document in the notion of being transparent i think its best to put forward the whole document and done the show as we Antiguans would say.

I disagree with Mr. Browne that UPP reputation is on the line. When you ask the question, “ What is the UPP’s Reputation? People have formed hard inrooted opinion on UPP and the reputation is set in stone already. I also feel that we should give Larry, Moe and Curley a chance, Who knows? I feel they may do the right thing. I got a hunch that something is up with that selected group of PM wanna B’s. There a 50/50 chance. It would have been better to have an independent study and there will be one day but for today let them do their work. They have 14 days, It would be a surprise if in 14 days they have something on the table, that would be a miracle. Let them do their work.

Gaston “smack down” Browne, “PM”

#4 PLM » 2012-07-11 07:08

Gaston has been out front on this from the beginning, and he’s correct again. The sub-committee is a dodge. The PM is suffering from a crisis of confidence and competence, so he needs to resolve this issue post haste.

Dr. Issac Newton says, "The Lesser of Two Evils Is Still Evil." Jumbee Picknee says, " Unless the people, awake and come to the realization, that they are pawns in the political game, fodder for the criminals to fatten their loot, coffer, bank accounts, they as in the case of a majority of Antiguans, Barbudans & Redondans will forever be like beggars, living hand to mouth." PEOPLE, WAKE UP, RISE UP FROM YOUR DOLDRUMS, hear the echos, the resounding beat of the drum of freedom and free yourselves from all this thuggish misery...

Greetings, One Aim, One Truth, One Destiny. Nietzche say, "Out of Caos, comes Order." John Lennon says, "Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives." James Arthur says, "Secret Societies(Gover nments ALP/UPP) have a great motto 'Ordo Ab Chao'
Agendas are formulated, designed to give the powerfull more power. Chaos is created and media blitzed. Then cries go out for solution. Laws are passed which could never have been passed without the caos. The Order(Governmen t - ALP/UPP) has reigned through deception of the m**, and the agenda is accomplished
