Antigua St John's - It is now official: Melford Nicholas will be the Antigua Labour Party’s candidate in the St John’s City East constituency for the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2014.
The announcement was made by party chairman, Gaston Browne, during a broadcast of the ALP’s weekly radio programme, Insight.
The announcement came as Browne was again making clear the party’s decision regarding the selection of candidates in those constituencies where more than one candidate have indicated a desire to be selected as part of the party’s slate.
“The candidate situation in St John’s City East has been settled and Comrade Melford Nicholas is the official ALP candidate for that constituency,” Browne announced.
At least three other candidates had indicated a desire to be selected but it is believed that negotiations were held with all three Jacqui Browne, Lawrence Merchant and Roderick Faustin to take a back seat in favor of Nicholas, who came over to the ALP following the merger with the Organization for national Development.
As part of that merger, Nicholas, the OND leader, was guaranteed that he would be a candidate as part of the arrangement.
Meanwhile, the ALP said it is committed to holding opinion polls to determine the candidates in those other constituencies where more than one candidate is involved.
Browne said the party will invite in an expert pollster to do the actual work and that the party has opted for face to face interviews rather than have the polls conducted via telephone.
