ALP Sticking With Opinion Polls

ALP Sticking With Opinion PollsAntigua St John's - The opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) will continue to use opinion polls for candidate selection in constituencies where more than one prospect has expressed an interest in running on the party’s ticket.

That was the word from ALP Chairman Gaston Browne, in a one-on-one interview with Caribarena.com.

Some potential candidates have expressed displeasure with the party’s decision to use the polls, rather than the traditional primary system of candidate selection.

“The selection of candidates will be done scientifically and objectively. We will not violate the constitution in the process, but we see opinion polls as less divisive than primaries, and we have opted to avert divisiveness,” Browne said.

He added that the polls will provide the party with the information to determine which candidate has the best chances of winning in a given constituency, and that is whom the party will throw its full weight behind. He added that the party would also consider adding names to an opinion poll in addition to those who may have declared an interest.

Since the party's decision  was made public by its leader, Lester Bird, at least one candidate has publicly questioned the decision and called it unconstitutional.

But Browne defended the decision, noting that the poll method was used prior to the 2009 general elections to determine the best candidate for the St John’s City South constituency. Eustace "Teco" Lake, a relatively unknown national, was found to be the best candidate.

“There were some who still insisted on having a primary, and we were prepared to hold the primary. However, when they realised that we were supporting Lake, they backed away,” he explained.

There are at least three constituencies where multiple candidates have expressed a desire to be selected . These are St Philip South – Lennox Weston and Maureen Hyman-Payne; St George – Dean Jonas and Kelton Dalso; and All Saints West – Daven Joseph, Wigley George, and Ralph Potter.

Polls!

#5 ACLM » 2012-04-11 20:30

I wonder if the Leadership of the ALP will use a Poll to decide the next Leader - unless the same rules doesn't apply to them?

St.Philips South Needs real representation- No Hyman or Weston!

#4 BethesdaManOnFire » 2012-04-11 14:31

Neither Hyman or Weston are desired by us in St.Philip South!

ALP needs to send us proper representation similar to the stature of the late Reuben Harris.

Bethesda has always been at the forefront of the struggle. We felt disrespected with the last set of candidates especially Wally Browne.

Send any of the two and we will vote Wilmoth Daniel again!

STEVE isn't a similar thing happening in the republican races? If you listened you would have heard Rick Santorum claim that the establishment/ party supports Romney. Browne has also stated that if an individual is not happy with the polls, they still have the option of utilizing the primary (his statement is below:)

Quote:
RE: ALP and its Rockus - Recipe for Defeat #11 Gaston Browne » 2012-04-07 10:19 The decision of the Executive of the ALP is to conduct independent polls where there are two or more persons contesting. The party will then endorse the candidacy of the person with the popular choice or the largest plurality of votes. Candidates will be encouraged to abide by the results of the poll. This however, does not preclude the other candidates from exercising their constitutional right to a primary but they will obviously do so without the endorsement of the Executive. Clearly, the polls will not violate the provisions of the constitution. This is a an objective methodology we have utilised successfully in the past with great success thereby reducing the level of division and discontent

DEMOCRACY UNDER ATTACK

#1 STEVE » 2012-04-11 04:48

It is so sad that PRINCIPLE ALWAYS SEEMS TO LOOSE but God is good and he will work it out. Look at how they (the A.L.P.) expose themselves for the world to see their nakedness: “There were some who still insisted on having a primary, and we were prepared to hold the primary. However, when they realised that we were supporting Lake, they backed away,” he explained. SIMPLE QUESTION, WHO WERE THE WE? WHO WERE THE WE WHO EFFECTIVELY "CIRCUMVENTED THE CONSTITUTIONAL WAY OF PICKING THE CANDIDATE"? And just to be PELLUCID, that constitutional way IS A PRIMARY. What an admission!! I don't know which party will win the next general elections BUT I KNOW IT WILL BE WITHOUT MY VOTE. SHAME ON THE A.L.P. AND THE U.P.P.
