Bajan Officers to Assist with Investigations

Bajan Officers to Assist with InvestigationsAntigua St. John's - A team of senior officers from the Royal Barbados Police Force is on island to assist with investigating some of the gun-related criminal activities taking place in the country.

The team will also assist local law enforcement officers with investigations into the recent murder of Susan Powell.

Both Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Minister of National Security Dr Errol Cort had announced that they would be seeking assistance from regional and international partners to assist the members of the Royal Police Force with investigating the recent upsurge in crime.

The four officers from Barbados, comprising two assistant superintendents, an inspector and a sergeant, all with specialised skills, have been brought in to complement the work of local officers.

Dr Cort thanked to the government of Barbados and the Royal Barbados Police for availing these senior officers to travel to Antigua.

Of all the islands from which to seek help with our crime problem, why Barbados. There is nothing outstanding about the Barbados police force except their insipid accent, prejudice against Caribbean nationals and expertise in covering up sensitive, high level matters. I smell a rat.

It is alleged that persons in high places a part and parcel of the local crime problem. Plus the seeming police-assisted escapes of Kenroy Marshall on two occasions has to be taken into consideration. Moreover, the policeman (lxxxr) that was arrested and charged with money laundering and was also implicated in the Kenroy Marshall murder mystery is from the island of Barbados. Keep your eyes open folks, a gouglie is on the way.

@ Jody /Tenman - while we're on police reports

#40 Dessalines » 2013-03-10 10:42

Police reports are a farce anyway and do not weed out criminals.
Firstly in Antigua when the immigration department requests a police report that report is hand-delivered by the applicant instead of mailed directly from the police station (locally or abroad) to the immigration department.
Secondly in Antigua there is no database of criminals records. There are two books on a desk where an officer flips through a couple pages and then stamps your clean report and charge you 10 dollars for disturbing his beauty rest.
Thirdly if a non national is living in Antigua for over 1 year they do not have to produce a police report from their country of origin.
So lets not be lulled into a false sense of security thinking that our super efficient and overly competent immigration and law enforcement agencies are vetting and weeding out the criminals in our midst.

Here is what Errol Cort had to say about the Caricom deportee situation:
Quote:
There was also concern about the number of deportees of other nationalities residing in Antigua & Barbuda unknown to local law enforcement. “…That is an area of concern to law enforcement in that we would not have the mechanism to monitor these individuals, because we simply don’t know who they are,” the minister said. Furthermore most skilled certificate holders are university graduates, media personnel, sports persons and artistes - not exactly the criminally minded type and we do know exactly who they are.

Jody where persons come here under csme (free movement of skilled nationals), they are granted a 6 month stay and have to go through a process where their credentials are checked. One of the checks requires that they submit a police report. If they are not considered undesirables and their credentials bare out, they are then granted an indefinite stay

The church have a linking to the court of law, the treasury have a linking to the court of law, civilian have a linking to the court of law, the police/security have a linking to the court of law. Are they the court of law?

Sometimes i wonder why i blog but then i realise it is because i care, even thou i know, 99.999% will not listen but will find the most negative and illogical comment to make.

I will say again, I do not think we are ready for courts of appeal, especially a final court of appeals to be housed in OECS or CARICOM. Court means a place where a man or woman sits and interpret the law (adjudicate over legal and factual matters with power derived directly from the constitution or through statutory law).

COURT DOES NOT EQUAL POLICE

What on earth are you talking about, I am speaking of a court of law. I am not talking about police officers. When your argument make no sense, just apologise Tenman.

We have been arguing about court of law, now you brought in police. Now, as the Antiguan you are attack a person character and profession, instead of a intellectual debate.

If you do not know the police is completely different from a court of law, then i am sorry for you. Soon you will say a security guard is part of the court of law also.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS.

#32 jody » 2013-03-09 21:08

The easiest to prevent crime from taking place or increasing in Antigua and Barbuda is to do a CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK ON ALL FOREIGNERS that enter the country and thse with the intention of remaining there. If they are found with a criminal history they should be immediately deported and banned forever. With this new CARICOM AGREEMENT, every foreigner comes and commits crimes or continue their criminal activities from the country where they were either deported after being released from prison.
PLEASE DO A CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK AND DEPORT THE CRIMINALS. I AM SURE A CHANGE WILL BE NOTICED ONCE THIS IS DONE. I WANT MY ANTIGUA BACK!!!

The Barbados crime situation is much worse than antigua's. our country is going from bad to worse. Our police chief is still AWOL? Maybe he is over in Barbados helping the Bajans! Every time I see a picture of the police I see a defeated posture, I see a look that says we are in over our heads and i have no idea how to solve this problem, what they seems not to understand is that the posture that they project is very, very important. a posture of confidense say to the people we are in charge we have it under control, so the folks that is in charge of public relations need to talk to these people that they need to project a possitive image to the public.

Remember when you and I debated the meaning of national security? here is a good example of how this crime wave and in particular the Powell murder can damage the national image and at the same time prove this untrained bunch are always lying tothe public. Did the NSM not say they have a trained force in Heritage Quay that specializing in tourism? Now you know he lie. Where was this trained specialized force when Powell got killed on a donut break? The cops have no radios so they can not coordinate a lock down of the quay is something like this happened. I spent 22 years afilliated with the military and We anticipate everything. Even if you work in an office you practice a terrorist raid or Nuclear fall out or fire drills etc. Have the special task force practice what would happen if a ship was in and terrorists attacked at Heritage Quay? You NSM knows as much about security as he know about economics and finance.

I agree with you both. This move could have negative results. The NSM talks out of both ends and I can't figure which end is talking, his mouth or his bottom hole. He needs to fire his speach writer. His ideas has not follow thru, half-baked and it looks as if he speaks for convience of keeping folks quiet hoping the problem will go away. After a while you build a track record. People will know how good you really are not from what you say but from what you do. As I drive by the 8 million stadium rusting with homeless people living in it I am reminded ov the wonderful luxury compartment and another "Error Caught".

RE: Bajan Officers to Assist with Investigations

#13 SlyThatGuy » 2013-03-09 11:11

Really,What does our government expect these Bajan officers to do about investigating this case that actually could not be done by our local investigating team? Investigation into the murder of Susan Powell should have started by our investigating team as soon as the police received the call and arrived at the crime scene. There, they were to secure the area and try to find and collect any physical evidence - including any information from eyewitness - that could shed light on what happened and that might point to who did it. After learning the identification of the victim, they should have then gone into her neighborhood to question family members (husband, mother ,father, brother s,sisters, cousi ns,etc.),close friends, and associates about any possible enemy who might have wanted to hurt her. That's how investigators of murder crimes go about getting a lead. Well,if no leads has been established as of date,it would be very interesting to see what difference these Bajan officers make. Good luck.

#10 Jumbee Picknee » 2013-03-09 10:17

This is a slap in the face of the Police Force and a size 15 up the behind.
It shows, several things:
Lack of trust in the Upper ranks..
Lack of leadership from the Upper Ranks...
This will not sit well with many in the lower ranks and could be more of a destabilizing factor.
The question MUST then be asked, does Our Constitution allows for the same to happen to Our Parliament? JUST BEEN FACETIOUS!!!!

WALKIE TALKIE

#8 skyewill » 2013-03-09 09:01

I hope they brought some radios for the police to communicate. The idea of using outside officers is not bad but should be expanded to CARICOM. All these small islands are experiencing major crime and police curruption problems. What they need is a joint task force so they can exchange officers for special cases. The bad part is we need communication divices so our local cops can become a real force. We will always be looking outside for help if we don't build our own the right way. The shame is they are not paying our officers on time. The police force is stressed, they are under paid and do not have the tools to KEEP THEM SAFE. They also should not be on patrol alone. While on the streets of St. Johns, there should be at least teams of 2. Be proactive, you need uniforms on the street as a deterant, not undercover. Prevent crime instead of just trying to lock people up.

MY WAY OF HELPING, its strange you would say you like this kind of corporation. Strange, because you are then against the idea of us continuing (already in place) it with the judiciary. You even argue against things like OECS. The truth is there should be a regional police force like existed under the WI federation.

Quote:
National Security Minister Dr. Errol Cort has again touted the notion of establishing a regional police force for the Eastern Caribbean and wider afield. The minister, who sits as chairman of the Regional Security System (RSS), said he intends to use his influence at the head of the table to push the motion forward while zooming in on its unmatched benefits that include the ability to seamlessly share in both personnel and expertise. He said that while some countries might not have the capacity in either areas to effectively respond to a matter at hand in the timeframe most efficient, it could easily “mount a team” of professionals from other islands to assist in the process.
