Bakery Robber on the Loose

Photo by JahzenAntigua St. John's - Despite the establishment of a serious crime task force, headquartered at the nation's main military facility at Camp Blizzard, as announced by Dr Errol Cort, a series of robberies and gun crimes continues to plague residents.

Following an incident in which a man was shot in the head in Willikies during a botched robbery, mere days later, another robbery reportedly occurred at Brownie's Bakery, headquarters at lower St John's Street.

At about 6:45 pm, an employee had just left the building to join the driver to take the day’s takings to the bank when a lone gunman rushed up to her, and snatched the bag that reportedly contained over $20,000. The driver got out and gave chase, but the robber allegedly fired at him, and he had to back off.

The shot alerted residents, but by then the robber had disappeared.

The incident was reported to the police, who subsequently arrived to carry out investigations.

Up to press time, there had not been any arrests.

When Caribarena contacted police PRO Frankie Thomas, he said he had only heard of the robbery, but there was no official word about it, so he could not comment.

‪Reports indicate that by midnight last night, Brownies Bakery was again open for business.‬

When is this Gov going to get serious about combatting crime? This is getting out of hand now and will soon start to affect our already vulnerable tourism industry. Seems like the criminals have a free pass to terrorize the law abiding citizens who live here and nothing is being done about it. We all need to stand up to this nonsense. We are the majority and should not allow ourselves to become prisoners in our own homes. It's time to start fighting back. I will protect my family in any way I can and suffer the consequences after. The authorities have failed to protect us so I am declaring that I am now the protecting authority over me and mine.

Just suppose it went like this......Brown ies had armed security transporting their cash to the bank but for some reason the owner felt he was paying money for nothing since no one ever tried to rob him. That was the end of the security service contract. The good gentleman is now out the country leaving his employees to face the wrath of the robber isfand when they should arrive. They have arrived!!

Skye, prisons are money makers in developed countries. The problem is that we just don't know how to use HMP as a money maker. Imagine the state-of-the-ar t maximum security prison that could have been built from that 3 billion. It would have probably been the envy of the C'bean. Maybe the authorities are not in a hurry to build a new one for fear that they may be housed there. :D

You don't need an army for that, you need a competent equipped police force. I for one have been calling for the dissolution of the army and transform it into a maritime force. I am willing to bet that most of the drugs and guns are coming through our porous waters.

If we don’t know how to handle our own how do we expect outsiders to know? It is that unique blend of who we are and the training we acquired in America that make these guys great choices on this issue. The professor knows that there is no way to save these criminals and he is statistically correct when he says it’s just a few doing the brazen robberies. But this situation was built over years and it will take years to kill off this cancer but kill it you must. But we must also adapt programs that target prevention and intervention in the schools from young and we must address corruption in high places. And to show we are serious, we must build a new jail. Maybe CARICOM can come together and we can house criminals in Antigua on a maximum security facility. Those other governments can pay us per inmate or some other innovative idea that will do 2 things. Provide a necessary service and have positive economic impact at the same time.

Professor talk about ERADICATIION. He is right. These criminals are killing, hurting and terrorizing old people, families, single moms and defenseless law abiding citizens. That is all I need to know to kill them. Nothing personal, they got to go. Cort do not have the training or the experience and and he's got armed guards at his house, if he was proactive, he would find out who Morris and professor is and consult them. Me, I am a profiler an information jockey, Morris and the Professor and Bill are operations guys and they know what they are talking about. Here is the difference between them and the Canadians: THEY KNOW THE CULTURE…period.

I will put a real good Staff Sgt with 5 years of service as COP in ANU over most Caribbean and or Third Worlder. He has seen more action received more training and more crisis than one of these guys do in 20 years. I would trust Morris, Professor or Antigua Bill with my life base on what I know about their training.

ERADICATION. Some may not know it but The FBI, CIA, DEA, ATF Secret Service are all military organizations. You should see some of the cannons these boys tote. The com complete with a fleet of civilians support staff including P**s and psychoanalysts (my specialty) to figure out based on the patterns the **s next move. But in the end it is the fire power. The National Guard is the home team that also has police powers and when we serve overseas like Iraq, we compliment their police and enforce the local laws. Within every Branch of service there is police operations and trained law enforcement. If some of you knew what goes on a US military installation you would freak. If you have never been in or affiliated with the US military, I don’t see how you could even have a clue. From the beginning we teach our people how to think, behave and react. Every person is trained how to manage crisis and most is trained to protect the president.

The only enemy to the state are armed bandits. Declare a state of emergency, hunt for them house by house, on the seas in the bush just pick them all up and hold them all indefinitely on Redonda like Guantanamo and then Antigua will be safe again.

I maintain that our society is too small and close knit to have these levels of crime. Somebody somewhere other than these thugs are calling the shots/launderin g/marketing the loots. Find the upholder and you will find the thieves. Our elders have always told us that the upholder is worse than the thief and so does the law. I hope that justice is served swiftly whenever these culprits are found.

#20 Professor » 2013-02-22 11:44

The problemis smaller than we imagine The criminal element of a normal society does not exceed 5% (including politicians). The purveyors of violent crimes constitute less than 0.5% (rape, robbery, aggrivated assaults and gun crimes). The truth is that Antigua has 200 VIOLENT CRIMINALS and less than 100 VIOLENT GUNMEN.

The police must abandon their antiquated approaches to crime stopping, crime fighting and crime solving. There is no SCIENCE in the local approach to law enforcement and that is a serious problem. All societies have a SUBSTRATA witha a CRIMINAL ELEMENT, which first needs to be INFILTRATED in order to obtain firsthand information regarding its structure and functioning if we are gong to solve the crime problem.

Like I said before here, an ERADICATION PLAN is required for its SHOCK VALUE. I have highly trained ex-military colleagues who are willing to spend 30 days in Jail to get get accrdited for an INFILTRATION OPERATION. That is only STAGE ONE.

Criminals like to brag about their exploits, but you cannot get the first hand information unless you are part of the group.

was this the whole weeks or one days sales? Cause those kind a money very high for selling just bread. Everage bread is $5.00 so that is about 4000 bread. Hmmm. And now security at the place to escort the lady to the bank. Just a lone driver. Anyway, business people must not be so cheap. Either get a gun yourself or hire a security firm. It is worth it. Money lost cannot come back. Insurance (money in transit)would not just pay you.

An armed 24/7 police vehicular patrol is needed

#16 Bluddy Bloke » 2013-02-22 10:51

To date, it is extremely sad to say that the public at large is not feeling the presence of the police. I am still of the view that they operating in an reactive mode as oppose to a proactive mode. It is full time that the police have a vehicular patrol with its siren light flashing in the night, 24/7 within each parish . The police stations need to be open 24/7. Atleast a vehicle can be assigned to each parish with atleast 2 armed / equipped officers patroling every 4hrs throughout the 24 hr period. A police helicopter need to be invested into also so that when 911 is being called, it can be deployed immediately so that it can get arial view of designated area where the crime has taken place. The criminals are clearly indicating that they are ontop of things.

#14 Monica Edwards » 2013-02-22 10:17

Similar to large businesses, small businesses have an obligation now more than before to include security as an annual operating expense. In a highly competitive market this means that the cost of goods will increase and annual sales may decline. This may be true to some extent. Overcome the shortfall by creating a marketing advantage that cannot be easily duplicated. Improve customer service, offer decent and relevant products and introduce creative incentives. Consumers will buy - especially if you market your products well and show evidence of improved security. Not only cameras and fancy electronic gadgets but security guards that are outfitted with restraining tools for the job.

Which army are you talking about? And for those of you who make excuses that a crime task force can not be everywhere you are mistaken. These crimes are every day now and sometimes more than once a day. All the stuff you see should only be 20% of what they should be doing. The other 80% is Pro-active not reactive. Do you know why police in develope countries seem to get their man most of the time? It is because their go after criminals. The criminals are chased. No big speaches just hard work. We know it is not going to be easy. The reason I caught the guys that were stealing my things is because I went after them not everybody. I even found some of my things in an abandoned house in the village. The entire experience allowed me to see how our police work and I can tell you it ain't pretty. They do not have the equipment. All the 3 billion dollar industry they say was in Antigua before US vs ANU in WTO, we have no infilstructure.

In support of some bloggers...no matter how much task force you setup there will be some crime happening. task force can't be everywhere at the same time. and crimes are done by people...yes people...they are your friends, cousins, brothers, sisters, enemies etc.

Task Forces, police, preacher, teacher, garbage man, maid and school children all must work together against those that are committing the crimes.

What we have to do is "say something when we see something" and stop hide and say "arnah fu meh business", because one day it will be you being their business of being their victim.

Armed Security Services

#8 NYC » 2013-02-22 09:00

Businesses should think of hiring Armed Security Services to take cash to the bank. I also said before that the police should be the unit to investigate and bag these bandits. The Army is trained for defense, war, big riots not to be policing the communities. If you unleach the army on the population you may get the results of a full blown war. Dr Caught and the Police Commissioner may not be up to the task.

Sounds a little fishy...

#7 Common Cents » 2013-02-22 08:35

This does sound very much like an inside job. The gunman was waiting patiently for the victim, and seized an extremely large sum of money for a small business.

They knew both when and who to strike, and also seemed to know that the person was carrying a large amount of money for a small business like Brownies. (unless a mistake was made with the amount)

Not to mention, robbers usually work in groups or pairs (one or two to rob, one or two for the getaway).
The fact that there was only one gunman, who fled on foot, indicates that this person KNEW that there was little chance of him being caught.

Look into this one cops!

What do we expect of the Crime Force?? its unrealistic to expect no crime as even if the entire police force was patoling the island there would still be some crime being committed somewhere. Obviously this was something planned or set up... People and Businesses have to change their routine and be more vigilant so they are not targeted by thieves. How did the thief know they were carrying money?? How could the person have disappeared so suddenly on such a busy street? Hmmmm

Now, with crime on the rise, people are getting held up and shot almost every other day, why did they not have proper security and escort to accompany the employee to the bank? The employee should be counting her blessings that she was not hurt.
