First Road Fatality for 2013

First Road Fatality for 2013Antigua St. John's - A homeless man was reportedly struck and killed on Hall Long Lane, near the Little Creek area, on Wednesday.

The blue Kia Rio, A29841, was being driven from south to north. The collision shattered the windshield.

Tyre marks were visible for some distance, and according to some onlookers, the body came to rest over 100 feet from the point of impact. The distance between the car and the deceased was reportedly about 30-40 feet.

Traffic in the area was extremely congested

The police have not released the identity of the deceased, but eyewitnesses were reportedly willing to assist the police in providing identification.

Traffic in the area was extremely congested, with complete blockage stretching for miles on both sides for well over two hours.

A release from the police this morning identified the dead as Wayne Williams of Baxter Street, Ottos.

Williams, who is believed to be in his Mid-50’s, may be commonly known to many as one who normally roam the streets of St. Johns and elsewhere.

lessons learned?

#13 wada » 2013-02-21 16:40

A friend of mine who lives in the south narrowly missed this same man. She said he was in the middle of the road and did not see him until the very last minute. She had to swerve to avoid hitting him, she was called about 15 minutes later to be told that the man was killed.

This also happened last year just in front of the race track on All Saints Rd. This is very unfortunate both for him and the driver, but what we take from this? A few months may pass and if nothing is done or learned, it will happen again.

Road Fatality

RIP Wayne. I will always remember you, not as you were in your latter years but as the man whose presence was constant in my younger years. Many viewed you as a pest to society but my family saw you as another soul who simply lost his way.

It's very evident from the damage done to the windshield, the distance of the tire skid marks, and the distance(100 feet)the victim's body came to rest from the point of impact that the driver was speeding. But the main thing that put people at great risk of being struck and killed are the many poorly designed roadways throughout our nation, which were built with no accommodation for pedestrians - no sidewalks or crosswalks. This man was obviously killed because he had no other choice but to walk in the street to get to where he was going, but his death has made us very aware of the need to build infrastructure for pedestrian and to improve safety for everyone.

Road Safety & Awareness

#10 Forward Thinker » 2013-02-21 10:33

Very sorry to hear and condolences to the family.

What "aj" has just mentioned is very important.
To many times you see ppl walking in the road without a care in the world about vehicles passing them. Road safety & awareness needs to be part of the education system as persons don't seem to understand that the vehicle or truck about to knock them down is not going to share a room with them at Mount St. John's!
Simple things such as walking into traffic and not with your back turned to it. Always use the sidewalk if one is there. when in groups, walk in a single file, not side by side. Persons walking in the dark of night should wear bright clothing!! Always look for uncoming traffic from both directions when crossing the road. "You ever hear bout car going hospital?!?!" is what i always used to hear growing up.

Antigua needs pavements

#9 Concern Mother » 2013-02-21 10:19

On these large main roads..can't we start to put pavements down?....The very idea that we are still force to work in the road is ludicrous!!

sad event...more than 1 side!!

#8 aj » 2013-02-21 10:02

It is real that a person died here; but what are the circumstances surrounding this calamity. Was the driver intoxicated? Was the pedestrian wearing light clothing? Was the driver overtaking/spee ding? Was the pedestrian intoxicated/on a suicide mission? Was the road properly lit, did the vehicle have proper lights? many questions to be answered...so lets not hang the driver for this before we get the facts. This could happen to anyone; you could have been the driver or the pedestrian...Sy mpathies to both parties and families....

It is so sad to see that the individual died like that. I think we need more lights on some of these roads so that pedestrians and people alike can see where they are going

athough i do sympathise with the family and i am also with the driver, it is obvious that alot of these things happen due to the darkness of the roads, people walking on the wrong side of the road due to the crime rate and they trying to keep in the "lighted" areas to avoid being jumped by criminals.... so sad to hear about the severity of this situaton.

It is very sad that he lost his life, nobody should die like that. At the same time we all need to be careful, pedestrians and drivers alike. I can't begin to count how many times I have to stop and ask people to use the sidewalks rather than the road and when one try to educated the pedestrians about their own safety, you're verbally attacked and insulted. Let's be wise people.

Always a sad event when people are struck and killed by vehicles. And in particular, if the person is disabled or disadvantaged. Dying in agony and alone... wow.
