Antigua St. John’s – Within a day or two of the close of the 2012 Carnival celebrations, the police were inundated by reports of wounding.
Coming out of the Party Monarch Competition on Saturday night, two young men reported that they were injured during a scuffling incident on the crowded grounds at Carnival City.
Firstly, a 19-year-old of Bathlodge told police that while he and his girlfriend were dancing in front of the stage, a scuffle ensued between two men.
Meanwhile, a number of persons had to seek medical treatment at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) following more than one stabbing incident at the Lion’s Den.
A 22-year-old male of Parham was rushed to MSJMC after he was stabbed in the chest. It is alleged that while he was dancing he apparently pushed against another man who took out a pair of scissors and inflicted a stab wound to the left side of his chest.
Doctors at the hospital reported that the wound was not life threatening. The incident took place around 5:34 am on Sunday.
In another incident, a 29-year-old resident of Seatons reported that he was struck in the face with a glass bottle by a man from Bethesda.
The man alleged that he went to the assistance of his younger sibling, who was being accosted by the Bethesda man, and in the process of inquiring what was going on, he was struck in the left eye and stabbed in the shoulder with a glass bottle.
He was taken to MSJMC where doctors reported that the wound was not life threatening. However, he was treated and kept for further observation. That incident took place shortly after 4 am Sunday.
Similarly, two brothers, a 29 year old and a 27 year old from Parham reported that they were injured at the Lion’s Den early Sunday morning.
The reports indicate that while both brothers were dancing in the band, a man armed with a pair of scissors entered the crowd and began stabbing.
As a result the older sibling received a stab wound to the left side of his face and also his right hand. His younger brother received a puncture wound to his right armpit, and had to be rushed to the hospital by the EMS.
Doctors at the hospital reported that the wound was not life threatening, but he will remain hospitalised for further observation.
Meantime, a 24-year-old resident of Baker’s Street, Gray’s Farm who was in close proximity to the brothers was also injured on the left side of his head and shoulder during that incident. He had since been treated and discharged from MSJMC.
The police are investigating a shooting which took place on Wilkinson’s Cross Street early Sunday morning that left a 28-year-old Herberts man nursing a gunshot wound to his hip.
It is alleged that the man was walking along the said street when a man approximately 5’ 10” tall, dressed in a red T-shirt and wearing mask, approached him and pointed a handgun at him.
The Herberts man reported that he started to run and he heard several loud explosions behind him.
He then realised that he was shot and wounded in his right hip in the process.
He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he was shot twice; however the wounds are not life threatening. The incident took place around 5 am. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
