Tour Bus Toppled Over With 30 Passengers

Tour Bus Capsizes With 30 PassengersAntigua St. John's - Thirty passengers – most of them children had quite a scare on Friday morning when a coaster bus shuttling them to the Wadadli Nature Park went out of control and toppled over.

Police spokesman Sr. Sgt. William Holder said that based on reports, the accident occurred on off-road terrain.

It is reported that the vehicle began to roll backwards despite the efforts of the driver to move it forward. It is still unclear what caused the vehicle to capsize.

The children were all taken to the Mount St. John’s Medical Center (MSJMC) for observation and as of late Friday afternoon, 29 of the 30 were released. The status of the last victim remains unclear.

The tour was the culmination of a summer bible study camp held under the auspices of the Swetes Wesleyan Holiness Church.

The injuries, none of which were life-threatening, were mostly lacerations due to passengers being tossed about the rolling vehicle. The driver was among those injured.

Six ambulances were required to transport the victims to MSJMC.

Hope everyone has a full recovery from this incident. The road pictured there is the road to the nature park so the bus was not moved for the photo. It's a concrete road but is a bit steep. It is possible that several factors, namely the incline of the road, weight of the bus and whether or not the road was wet from recent rains, can account for this accident. Knowing how the road is it is doubtful that speed was the issue here.

Just because the bus is pictured on a paved road doesn't mean that someone moved it there, nor does it mean that the bus was being driven on that same road. It's possible that it may have ended up there after toppling over and rolling.

The most important thing is that no lives were lost,no limbs(arms or legs)were broken, and no serious injuries were sustained. There is always great danger in operating a vehicle away from public road - especially one with the weight and size of that bus. Off-road terrain can even cause an army jeep, designed especially to operate on uneven surface, to flip over. So I think people are unfairly accusing the driver of speeding or driving recklessly. At least wait to see what result comes of the investigation.

I have been to Antigua many times, one the roads are) not good, second, some drivers going way to fast, Im sure many drivers have no licence government need to update roads and ensure all drivers pass road test. Glad no serious injuries in this accident.

HUMAN ERROR/MECHANICA L FAILURE?

#7 RAWLSTON POMPEY » 2012-07-21 10:52

Keen observations by "...REALITY." Road surface as pictured seemed ok. "...Off-road terrain" more suited to "...ATV'S- 4-wheel drive Jeeps and Quads.'' Passenger/tour buses are certainly not for such use/purpose.

With its pay-load of 30 passengers, if human error, "...Possibility " that ascending hill, driver may have allowed vehicle engine to lose power before "...shifting to a lower gear- second or first."

With all the competencies and skills, drivers may have grave difficulties maintaining control and/or manoeuvrability.

Mechanically/electrically, engine may have suddenly shut down in its ascent. Similar difficulties may have been likely. Too early to judge.

Tour Bus

#5 MG » 2012-07-21 07:10

A lot of these bus drivers cannot & don't know how to drive a stick shift. I remember the same thing happening when I was a kid the bus didn't turn over but came very close to as we were going up to Radio Range on a church outing.
Thank god the kids are ok but just because they were released from Mt St. DONE doesn't mean they are ok. We all know that hosiptal & the quality of care they give. I hope the parents will go to private doctors & have their kids PROPERLY EVALUATED.

...it's a blessing

#3 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-07-21 05:06

It's a positive blessing that this accident did not turn out to be a disaster. Great to know that most of them only sustained minor injuries. Positive prayers go out to the victim who is still hospitalized.

So if the accident occurred "off road terrain", who moved the bus to a paved road for the picture?
