Police Officer Questioned In Millet Case

Supt.-Nuffield-BurnetteAntigua St. John's - A police officer is among several people that have been questioned in the suspicious death case of the 13-year old Aneisha Millet of Bethesda.

The body of the teenager was found floating in the water off Devil’s Bridge on Saturday July 7. It was only identified by family members on Saturday July 14 after a composite drawing of her was published by the police in the local media.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, Supt. Nuffield Burnette, said the police are treating the death as ‘suspicious’ and that the investigation is taking place with a determination to solve the case.

He said the police are currently interviewing a number of people as part of the investigation and that one of the persons who has been named as having had contact with the deceased is a police officer attached to the Dockyard Station.

“We are questioning everybody whose name has surfaced as part of our investigation. We are not going to leave any stones unturned. We are spreading our net in this investigation and anyone who is caught will have to face the consequences, irrespective of who that may be,” Burnette declared.

He said the police have been receiving a number of tips from members of the public that have helped the investigation thus far.

The CID head said the investigation has been stymied because the police have not yet been able to determine the cause of death. However, this matter should be resolved by Thursday when a post-mortem examination is performed on the body to make the determination.

“We have secured the services of a forensic pathologist from the United States, whose specialty is working along with police departments to determine cause of death in suspicious circumstances,” he explained.

The forensic pathologist arrived in the country on Wednesday to assist with the case.

Millet was reported missing to the police by members of her family, and there has been an uneasy tension between the family and the police over their handling of the initial missing reports.

Responsibility

#18 Aliceinwonderland » 2012-07-22 13:23

There are so many ends to this sad story and only the Lord knows which is the right one. First of all, There needs to be harsher punishments for those persons who violate a child sexually. If they know they will rot in jail, they will do better. But sometimes, no matter what a parent does, the child will insist to go their own way. Why would a 13 year old child run away from home? Why didn't they go for their child if they knew where she was? This is just so heartbreaking.

THE PERPERTRATOR(S) WILL BE CAUGHT.

#16 Bluddy Bloke » 2012-07-19 23:50

The Royal Police Force of our little nation are quite efficient and capable of solving crimes, regardless of how complicated the crimes are. They have done it before and they can do it again. I have all confidence that the perpertrator(s) in this case will be caught.

I do agree, that, to operate and maintain such a facility on each island is not cost effective. However, each Island MUST have rheir own qualified and certified personnel to begin the initial investigation. The collection of evidence in at this stage is of utmost importance. Example, there is a central FBI facility at quantico va where state and other local judisdictions can turn to for added assistance, but the local team is qualified to collect the evidence

RE: Police Officer Questioned In Millet Case

#14 tenman » 2012-07-19 19:10

Jumbee Pickney, the questions should be asked is what is going on with the OECS forensic lab which was opened in Saint Lucia 22nd Dec 2009 (see www.thevoiceslu.com/local_news/2009/december/22_12_09/FORENSIC_LAB_OPENS.htm. This statement was made by the Dominican Acting COP in 2010 about the said lab:
Quote:
Acting Commissioner of Police Cyril Carrette says a forensic lab established by and for the OECS islands will save the authorities of each territory the wait and expense of sending material overseas for analyses. “If Dominica were to do it on its own, it would be too costly. Everywhere needs one but you cannot cut your nose to spite your face,” Carrette said. The commissioner was at the time responding to media queries on the police’s ability to solve crimes that are almost entirely forensic-related without seeking outside assistance. “I do not think there is any other way you could
do it. It is very expensive to maintain a forensic lab,” Carrette said.

..where are the Scotland Yard Graduates?

#13 Jumbee Picknee » 2012-07-19 18:08

Where are the Crime Scene Investigators who were trainned by Scotland Yard over the past 50 years? They are the ones who should have been trainning the up and coming Investigators. This means that there is no fluency within the force. Some crimes takes years to solve, especially in cases where the perpetrator is a "serial criminal"
I cannot believe, that at this juncture, we still don't have qualified CSI Teams consisting of Pathologist, Chemists, Biologists, Detectives, Photographers, Computer Geeks etc. Paying a qualified group like this $300,000. US per year is a more meaningfull investment, than paying a loobyist that same fee

RE: Police Officer Questioned In Millet Case

#10 SPEED BUMP » 2012-07-19 15:25

Is this article implying that this 'grey looking' cop was bang-banging a little 13 year old girl????

If its murder by a male and that male had smex with her before the incident then the specialist will use testing from swabs to find the man.

Ofr if testing show she was pregnant it could be a married man did not like that bad news and did that to the little girl.

What ever the case may be I hope they find his **!

"I thought we have that facility opened and working. What the hell is going on here?"
Skywell, to support your question....
The government is full a $h1t when it comes to sending people all over the place on scholarships. They need to look at what is in need. Not because you want to be a Doctor that the government should just jump up and give you scholarship. The government need to give scholarship based on the need of the country. For example, start giving scholarship to study forensic...

My condolences

#6 Dig It » 2012-07-19 10:37

My condolences to the family of Millet. It is not easy to lose a child at such a young age, and I really hope that our Police find the person or persons responsible for her death, and, let them face the full extent of the law, regardless if he is a Officer of the law.

#4 tenman » 2012-07-19 08:18

Skyewill, that lab you are speaking of had nothing to do with this kind of forensic investigations. It has to do with crimes related to computers "cyber crime"). For some strange reason, cyber crime was deemed more important. Seems its more catchy politically. Truth be known we do not need our own forensic lab, we can share one with one of our regional counter parts. We simply need persons on the ground who are trained to collect the evidence.
