Accused Police Officer Granted Bail

Police Officer Granted BailAntigua St. John's - A number of persons appeared before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh in the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court on Monday including a police officer charged for sexually molesting  a 19-year-old woman.

The 42-year-old officer is charged with serious indecency and attempted rape.

No objections were made by the prosecution to the police corporal being released on bail. He was therefore granted bail in the sum of $5,000 with one surety. A cash deposit of $1,500 was, however, required.

In addition to surrendering his travel documents, the officer will have to report every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday to the Police Headquarters between the hours of 6am and 6pm.

Attorney-at-law Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin is representing the officer, who is a constituent.

Benjamin said he will forcefully fight the case because the victim is trying to besmirch the officer’s name. He said legal action might be taken against the victim in the not too distant future.

The sexual offences reportedly occurred on June 30 in Bendals. The victim is a 19-year-old woman.

The case has been adjourned to October 8.
