ONDCP Continues Investigation into Dante Arrest

Dante Tagliaventi photo- noticiassin.comAntigua St John's - Investigations into the arrest and extradition of local businessman Dante Tagliaventi continue in full force here in Antigua & Barbuda as the ONDCP seeks to determine the depth of the embattled businessman’s alleged illegal activities locally.

Caribarena.com understands that the investigation has brought at least three lawmen into focus for allegedly playing a role in the Tagliaventi enterprise in exchange for gifts and favors.

Head of the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Policy (ONDCP) Lt. Col. Edward Croft confirmed that the investigations are indeed underway but declined to comment on the aspect of the inquiry that involves the officers.

He did not however deny that such is indeed underway.

“I can’t make a comment on it. It is not appropriate for me to make any comment on the matter at this time,” Croft said.

The ONDCP head said however that while the investigation continues from the Antigua & Barbuda end, things are happening overseas and the case is progressing.

“We continue investigations to ascertain what transpired at this end and to hold those individuals engaged accountable,” he said, adding that since the investigation was ongoing, not much could be divulged.

At the end of the probe in Antigua “the appropriate authorities” will be advised of the findings, Croft said.

Dante Tagliaventi, a renowned businessman, was arrested in the Dominican Republic (DR) on drug charges in May.

The 53-year-old is reported to have been the subject of a sting operation organized by the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Tagliaventi was taken into custody in Puerto Rico following an almost immediate extradition from the DR.

Tagliaventi is allegedly involved in a ring smuggling drugs from Colombia to Puerto Rico.

If we're going to see improvement with respect to police corruption, our government must begin to seriously punish police officers who are involved in crimes with long imprisonment, hefty fines, terminati on from work and,if necessary, depor tation. If the system fails to punish them for committing a crime,it's making it possible for them to get away with it, and there's hardly any cop out there who wouldn't want to take the risk when there's a lot of money to be made and little or no consequences.

They like to put dem young men who have no money in jail for ah gram of herb but let the cocaine smugglers go. How many lives they interrupt for ah bag of herb but this man with money was able to conduct a drug smuggling ring for a long time. lol

They wonder why the youths don't trust or respect people with authority.

Bad apples spoil the whole bunch!

In our little paradise, our citizens know the police are here to protect them but with the very actions of a few "bad apples" make it much harder to "trust" them! We have seen our officers on the "wrong side" of the law, time and time again! Yet, no proper measures are put in place to keep them on the "right side" of the law! We need to "screen" our officers with much more "scrutiny" so they could avoid the "temptations" of the "Dark Underworld!" The public and the police should be working side-by-side to fight crimes or illegal activities plaguing the land!

#4 INJUSTICE » 2012-07-09 08:31

We need to set up an Anti-Corruption branch in the force which is independent of the police force just like what Jamaica did. If you read the jamaica star or observer weekly you will see how many police officers are carted off to jail for corrupt acts or percieved corrupt acts. We here in Antigua needs to stop the talking and get tough too much gangsta cops are allowed to plague our police force and it just makes the real cops who is serious about law and order be less trust worthy.
If we intend on getting serious i would urge whoever is in authority to get serious about this change the laws to reflect the necessary harsh treatment that is suppose to be given to those guys that is supposed to be protecting and serving us instead they themselves are involve in these heineous crimes and corrupt practice. Stop sending them the police hq for holding whn they are being remanded send them down to 1735 put them with the ordinary criminals cause they are just the same as the people they lockup.

Whilst I have the utmost confidence in Lt Col Croft, it is going to be interesting what the "higher ups" reactions are going to be! Maybe they will do a "cool & smooth" move and sweep it under the table- after all if they can forget all about a container>>.... .........

Agreed these are currently just accusations. However, it continues to show that its time to put proactive policies in place which will help weed out corruption. Let me again call for an independent agency like The Independent Commission of Investigations in Jamaica. A good read on why this is important can be found at www.governmentauditors.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=453:law-enforcement-auditing-policing-the-police&catid=47:accounts&Itemid=123

Police officers AGAIN!!!!!!!!

#1 Dessalines » 2012-07-09 08:17

If I'm not mistaken this case brings the number of police officers on the wrong side of the law to 10 - just for the year 2012. This appears on the surface to be a culture in the force as opposed to a few bad apples.

One has to wonder how serious are the police force heads of weeding out dirty cops since none of these cases resulted from an internal police force investigation or sting.
