ONDCP Mum on Tagliaventi Arrest

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Croft Antigua St John's - Director of the Office of National Drug and Money Laundering Policy (ONDCP) Lieutenant Colonel Edward Croft has said while Antigua and Barbuda has maintained an active partnership with the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and a number of other entities on cases of suspicion, the absence of concrete evidence restricts his office from making any public pronouncements on active cases like that of local businessman Dante Tagliaventi, who was arrested overseas on Thursday on drug-related charges.

The businessman is known. renowned locally for his Heritage Quay businesses, Timeless Treasures and Millennium, which were closed, and Luxury Brands, which is to close its doors sometime this month.

The ONDCP director said he has not been briefed on the matter, but would be looking into it. He did however label the incident as "sensitive" and of a "serious" nature.

"Based on the sensitivity of the issue, I would have to withhold (an official comment) at this time until I have more facts on the situation," Lieutenant Colonel Croft said.

Caribarena questioned the anti-drug and money-laundering head about whether his office had any inclination from private or public sources of Tagliaventi or any other local businessperson's potential involvement in drugs or money laundering, which has either sparked an investigation or has led to charges and an eventual conviction in, or outside of Antigua.

But the Lieutenant Colonel declined to comment. He also withheld responses on whether his office or any other branch of local law enforcement had any interest in Tagliaventi for crimes in Antigua and Barbuda drugs or otherwise.

The ONDCP head has however gone on record as saying that the suspicion, especially of a prominent businessperson, needs to be handled with the utmost caution, since in the absence of charges and possibly a conviction, the individual's character and potential business operations could be seriously jeopardized.

"That would be very unfair for me to make a commit on suspicion on anyone. Because that could cause a discredit that individual or entity if I am not able to bring proof. It would not be fair to express suspicion and you are negatively affected, then I have no evidence and I am not able to prove anything in court. Hence me saying it would not be fair for me to do that at this time," Lieutenant Colonel Croft said.

He added, "Unless we have the evidence it is nothing for anyone to be aware of until we are able to do what we need to do to bring them to justice."

Tagliaventi was accused in 2004, with nine other men, of allegedly trafficking 500 kilos of cocaine. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Canada had intercepted the load. An extradition request was made for him by the Canadian authorities, but was withdrawn in 2007.

Dante should open his mouth, then you'll hear story jump out. There are a lot of other people involved in this and they have been for years. The only way Dante won't talk is if they threaten his family.

Such is Life

Unfortunately we know how Antigua is and unless we as citizen continue to allow politicians to do as they please and pamper these high class individuals in society the drugs, money laundring, and muder rate will only continue to increase. They come to the Caribbean with their money and dirty habits because they believe Caribbean people are dunce and can be bought. We need to put a stop to many of the illegal activities conducted by businessmen and politicians then you will see a change. Some people in Antigua can be bought because they do not consider the actions of others as harm to them but we all are affected by the outcome of street drug dealers murdering people and people being robbed. We need to regain our values and self-respect

Well said "Dig it" As I said in a previous blog, foreighn investors are not scrutinizes like average locals because they are provideing jobs and business to the Country. Your polititions probably know their reputations but are paid to be quiet about it, like the Standford and King issues. Yes in America there is corruption also but those foreign investors know they have a better chance of hiding in little Antigua than America. Notice who always catch and arrest them?. Not Antigua"s law authority but oversease authority.

Digit and Morris, I agree with you guys. I might add that one who holds himself out as a legitimate "business person" should carry him/herself in such a way as not even be considered to be involved in illegal activity. The "business person is one of main pillars of the society that many persons look up to and admire for working hard and contributing to society. Thus, if there is any suspicion, then the ONDCP should conduct covert investigations to ascertain the facts and if proven to be correct, the the "business person" should be treated just like any other criminal.

Shouldn't this practice apply to all citizens? It is amazing how a common citizen can be detained and searched based on suspicion; however, consideration is given to "prominent business owners." And we wonder why the public has such dislike for the Police.

Only in Antigua

One of the problems we have in this country is the "fact" that those "High-in-Societ y" are either "invincible" from law enforcement or refrained from "public-critics m!" Yet, many in the public knows or have some knowledge of those very ones "polluting" the country with drugs and guns. Sadly, the ONDCP doesn't know or have a clue! I am of the view that the head of the ONDCP should have handled the situation much better, in making such "public announcement," or wait for the "evidence!" We don't need to pacify any businessman's "philanthropic" efforts on these shores as a way to downplay thier possible involvement in crimes! I am sure if this was a youth or low-level drug-dealer, he or she would have faced more public-criticis m from the ONDCP or the public! Only in Antigua!

STRAIGHT UP - Law enforcement in Antigua ** and I'll bet dollars to donuts that DEA and others will not tell Antigua what they are doing. ONDCP only know how to lock up small Herbman and ME, myself and I believe that they know the King Pin and fraid for touch family members. But The DEA is watching Noriaga and will come to Antigua in the middle of the night using black hawk helicopters and commandos and retrieve the SCORPIAN!
