Dante Arrested in Dominican Republic

photo - ixposednews.comAntigua St john's - Businessman Dante Tagliaventi has been arrested in the Dominican Republic on drug charges.

Tagliaventi, 53, left Antigua on Wednesday for the DR, where he is said to also own businesses, and was arrested on arrival.

Reports are that he has since been handed over to US Drug Enforcement Agency officials in Puerto Rico, and is being held in custody.

Tagliaventi, known as The Italian, has allegedly been involved in smuggling drugs from Colombia to Puerto Rico.

Dominican lawmen collaborated with DEA agency to await Tagliaventi as he alighted from the aircraft at the Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo. He was immediately extradited to Puerto Rico, and made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Lawmen believe that Tagliaventi was in the DR to co-ordinate the delivery of a shipment of drugs to the Dominican Republic.

Newspaper reports said while Tagliaventi lived in Puerto Rico for several years, he had settled in Antigua, and his alleged lieutenant lived in Colombia and Venezuela, cultivating relationships with major suppliers of cocaine.

It is estimated that the gang could have sent some 4,000 kilos of cocaine in a period of five years through a complex operation that took its transportation-land between Colombia and Venezuela.

It is believed that the gang paid the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to cross the border with the drug.

The packages of cocaine were reportedly thrown into the waters of Tortola and Antigua to be picked up in boats that docked in Puerto Rico.

Much of the drug was intended for local consumption, or the cities of Miami and New York.

drug trade is about supplying something that is in demand. The demand will not change until you fix the heads of the people in your country.America loves to point the finger at us down here as if we are the cause...
Do you think that drug trafficking will stop if the West Indies sank into to the ocean? Tal!!
We have so much corruption and disinterest from our leaders that cause so much more harm than Dante ever did ..to this island ....we better expect a lot more of this as Antigua continues to slide down the economic totem pole fast than any of its neighbours!

Why we keep using the USA as the yard stick to set our standard. The USA is the number one consumer of narcotics on planet earth, maybe even in the know Universe.

It's laughable the way people keep saying Antigua is a corrupt state and that's why people come here to commit crimes that they can't in their own countries. Corruption is present in EVERY country and especially in a lot of these countries that like to proclaim how corrupt other countries are. The amount of so called " white collar" crimes committed in these countries is staggering. The fact of the matter is that many of these people come to Antigua already well versed from their own countries on how to commit these "white collar" crimes. Every country over time learn how to protect itself from certain crimes only after they've occurred. People seem to expect that Antigua's reasonably young democracy should somehow measure up to countries like the US of A. However, in the history of that country there is well recorded evidence of corruption on all levels, from politicians to police, as they were developing. Even with all the sophisticated technology and laws against corruption today you still find instances of embezzlement, fraud and various scandals taking place at all levels.

#22 Not Judging » 2012-05-12 17:56

To all who have the world to say. I say "Judge not lest ye be judged!" If I remember my Bible correctly it also says "Ye who is without sin let him cast the first stone!
Be careful about passing judgement before the trial starts. And remember when you point one finger at someone three more are pointing right back at you.

Antiguans need to wake up. Why would foreigners want to leave their developed countries and do business in little Antigua?. It's because the corruptions that they can get away with there, they cannot in their country of origin. Why do you think people like Allen Standford was there?,the little he can dish out there to get away with corruption seem to be a whole lot for little Antigua to accept him.

Dante was arrested for trafficing cocaine to Newfounland in 2004, his lawyers and our inept jukiciary allowed him to frustrate the Canadian Police so they finally gave up on extraditing him in 2007. Despite his pending extradition Dante was allowed to continue operating his jewelly Store and to subsequently obtain a license to operate Luxery Brands with no interferance form the ONDCP or the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. We are the ones who are condone the **s whether they are black or white, grease the right palms and you have a safe haven in Antigua. No wonder we attract **s I heard Stanford was thrown out of Monsterrat under a cloud of scandal, Therefore both government have the same weakness , we need men who refuse bribes and govern our country with integrity , ha hha hah we have to wait for the second coming of Jesus for that , so choose the lesser of the two evils, in my view for now it is ALP or a bloody coup

Anonimus,

In response to your statement above, I bet you that it can be proven that the jewellery business is a front for his allegedly bad dealings. I bet you that he buy the jewellery with cash from xxxx money and bostfully not hide his earnings from jewellery sales. This is money laundering, if you don't know. I bet you when they check his earnings from jewellery sale vs his payouts they'll see more light on his false operation. Antigua is now a income/business tax collecting country. But I bet you our revenue collection people don't eve have proper books on the man's income and expenses. And this include the people who live in mansion and don't have jobs. Too many loop holes in our system.

More than just drug trafficking?

#14 yt » 2012-05-12 13:26

Dante = Drugs and a lot of other things. Does no one remember the sex ring that was using young girls under the ruse of being an after school programme?? There were a few women involved in getting these girls 'groomed' for older powerful men to buy sex? And it was said that xxxxx was involved in this sex scandal right here in Antigua using children. What happened to all of that? Obviously men in power were sipping from the trough and everything was hushed up big time. A couple of the girls' families were paid off and they moved overseas (probably sent away by force). Why does no one remember this? These men that like to throw money at the community and clubs and assist with money here there and everywhere are making millions of dollars illegally in Antigua. They hide behind their generosity. There are several individuals and groups who are always in the press because they support monetarily. Keep your eyes open people, these wolves are fooling the ignorant m** on a daily basis.

#12 Fed Up » 2012-05-12 12:00

The DEA & Mounties have been after Dante for years now but were unable to get their hands on him because he is so well 'connected' here. There are plenty more like him, black & white so let's not get into the racist thing. Recently a local resident of English Harbour was arrested by the ONDCP for having weed, cocaine, lot's of cash and allegedly weapons. He has publicly stated that he will never go down because of his 'connections'. Figure that out !

#11 open minded » 2012-05-12 11:19

People need to get a grip on reality here. No one forces anyone to do drugs. They buy and take them off their own backs! Black Antiguans are suffering? Why don't we stop this black/white separation which in this case seems to be coming from "black" Antiguans. It's such an old argument. Are you saying this disgraceful government was solely voted in by white people? I don't think so. Why don't you all generate your hatred and uneducated comments towards your leaders who are robbing and doing more harm than Dante could ever do in his life time. Infact, Dante provided jobs in this country. All our goverment are doing is taking them away! So who is worse?! Atleast he is not preaching Christianity whilst his hands are in the kitty robbing our small island of the little it has. So why don't you leave Dante alone and look at the bigger picture. No good hypocrits. And to the "Queen" - Maybe the Antigua and Barbuda Police Force should concentrate more on their officers who are killing and robbing people all over the island. what is more important?

It is indeed amazing that Dante was allowed to operate here it Antigua for years and pass the radars of our law enforcement, but I wonder.... because rumors of his illegal dealings have been in the air. My question is how come no investigations were ever done, it's seems as if once you have money everyone has a price tag.

Is the pope a single male profession to be catholic?
YES!!! so
Quote:
By the way, is this one of the names of the drug dealers that Lester promise to name some years ago?
yes or no? Many of us would like to be finally proven right. and what about a similar set up for yet an other business man and dealer in "jewelry" claiming to have come from the far east via St martin. likely he lost his weight not his ways. So Lester maybe now you can start naming names because Chef has been waiting almost 15 years for that one,, don't bother name Dante we already know about that one so does the DEA. Clearly the ONDCP does not. not even after 8 years of UPP sunshine .nope they specialize in busting local weed farmers not big time foreign coke dealers in Antigua. :zzz

#7 Queen » 2012-05-12 10:15

Black Antiguans are involved on the drug trade also...some have made lots and lots of money.....you see them driving expensive vehicles and living in large houses...some others have bought large homes...some own prime water front property and are well known the authorities have been operating for years, everyone knows who they are, they dont have jobs anywhere, yet they are rolling in money... they continue to operate...it makes you wonder who is getting paid off.....what a joke...If our save soul police chief wants to do something worthwhile for Antigua he should start rounding up all the drug importers and dealers...inste ad he is wasting tax money enforcing old english liquor laws....No one is surprised that Dante got picked up...remember when the Canadians wanted him..???..he has been up to no good for a long long time.....

#4 Dig It » 2012-05-12 07:47

This is a critical area that the Caribbean region has been "neglected" as the problem of trafficking drugs and weapons have gotten "out-of-control !" It puts and Antigua and other islands in a more "vulnerable" position, especially, when now economic activity has "declined" and "high-unemploym ent" and opportunities for the "youths" have caused more crimes and violence. They are a lot of Dante Tagliaventis out there "polluting" the region! We should see that they don't "settled" in Antigua or any other island to traffic drugs! Well, it seems that Dante has now meet his "Inferno."

This arrest will not come as a surprise to keen observers. There was always suspicion regarding his operations, and I would not be surprised if he is found guilty, when the matter goes to court. This is yet another example of the shortcomings of our "open door" immigration policy, where we do not seem to conduct adequate due diligence before allowing people to settle or invest in Antigua.

If this gentlemen had stayed in Antigua he would be
free today. Antigua seems to attract a certain type off
people who do illegal activities one form or another.
This place is being looked at as a failed corrupt state.
The only people who is suffering is the black Antiguans
who is left to bear the burden off a failed government,
agenda, these guys I think would not be able to manage
a sweetie tray. People replace this group but not with the
previous group.
