New Power plant to Open at Crabbes

New Power plant to Open at CrabbesAntigua St John's - The government of Antigua and Barbuda will commission a new 30 megawatt power generation plant on September 8.

It is expected to improve APUA’s ability to supply reliable electricity to its domestic and commercial clients.

The new power plant located at Crabbes was supplied by the Government of the Peoples Republic of China.

Non-Resident Ambassador to the Peoples Republic of China, David Shoul, speaking ahead of the September 8 commissioning ceremony said, “ Antigua, God’s willing, should have no more problems with electricity."

He was confident that the new power plant will improve the nation’s outlook for future development. “When the Chinese generator comes online, the capacity of the power generation in Antigua will be sufficient to meet our needs regardless of the size of future developments”

Ambassador Shoul, in highlighting additional benefits of APUA’s increased power generation capacity, expressed delight that Antiguans and Barbudans would have ownership in the new facility.

“What I also like about the power plant," he said, "is that it is now owned by Antiguans and Barbudans…APUA  is Antigua’s and Barbuda’s company….If you own something outright there can be no better way, properly managed, properly controlled. I think the benefits to the country should be tremendous.” Ambassador Shoul said.

The official handing over ceremony for the new power plant will take place at Crabbes at 4:40 pm on Thursday.

We understand the 44million chines loan does not include a transformer or sub-station to deliver current. They now have to use the old APUA desalting plant transformer!

Not with standing Ambassadors Shouls comments . Can we as tax payers really expect APUA staff to honestly MAINTAIN this new US $ 44 M Power plant ? What provision is there for correct spairs and inventory. Have the specific staff been trained to handle this out of date beast ?
Lets hope so on a positive note because your track record has been del***quant to date.

Concerned

#7 Lionman » 2011-09-07 09:57

My only concern is how reliable are the materials that was utilized to build this structure. China has a reputation to construct things with cheap materials, which in due time deterriates for example in South Africa where there are many Chinese stores selling cheap unhealthy products from China that is having negative health factors on the poor people. Safety is paramount when dealing with outside countries like China.

At What Cost?

#6 Darrell » 2011-09-07 09:55

At $44,000,000 usd for 30mw give you a cost of $1,466,000 PER MWH.
The international price for a state of the art power plant is just under a million per mega watt..

Does this mean my 'Fuel Variation' will go up or go down ?? If the plant is more efficient then it makes sense to me that the FV will reduce, but too many people making money out of us consumers by this FV racket that I suspect it will actually go up. Too many people a tief !!

Costs of ownership?

#2 Wada » 2011-09-07 06:16

It sounds great that we now own this 30 megawatt plant. What I am nor seeing is the cost of ownership? When I built my home, and the keys were handed over, I own it yes but there is mortgage, insurance, life insurance for the mortgage, operating costs i.e. electricity, water, repairs. What is the real cost of owning a fuel burning behemoth when oil prices are through the roof? Will our bills get an additional line item that says "paying back for the plant" or will APUA just gradually increase to the point where we can no longer all afford electricity?

its good news for power generation i guess, but a huge shame that there is still no plan on what to do with the waste oil this low tech plant will use.
Regular oil changes on this thing will generate a huge amount of the stuff and much of it will end up contaminating our environment.
We need a national plan on wast oils before we can truly celebrate this thing.
