Following the island wide power outage that occurred today (17th August, 2011), the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) sent out a press release detailing what went wrong.
At approximately 11:18 am, the electricity networked encountered a system collapse, causing an island-wide outage. APUA Engineers are still trouble shooting to diagnose the exact cause of the system failure.
However, APUA has since restored 50% of the services across the island and expect to have services fully restored by this evening.
APUA thanks the public for their patience during this period and would like to give full assurance that all resources have been deployed to rectify this issue.

Can't Comment?
Kidding aside, we should all respect the folks in the field who work hard to keep us with current, especially during unexpected blackouts.
Don't know for sure, but suspect there might be undervalued and underfunded preventative maintenance programs involved. Who knows?
Hope they get it together soon before my generator runs out of gas.
