Training Begins for Schools’ Security Guards

Training Begins for Schools’ Security GuardsAntigua St. John’s - The first of two week-long training sessions for security guards employed to work at the island’s schools, began Monday at the Langford’s Police Training Grounds.

A short Opening Ceremony to mark the occasion was held and attended by representatives of the Ministry of National Security & Labour as well as the Ministry of Education.

Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro said the training would help to clearly define the roles of the security guards as well as better equip them to serve within the school environment.

She noted that in the upcoming school year, a new initiative by the Ministry of Education would make the jobs of the guards easier. Each secondary school student is now required to have a student identification card, which must be carried with them at all times.

The card will bear not only the student’s name, date of birth and photograph, but also what school the student attends. This would go a long way in helping security guards in distinguishing those who should and should not be on the school plant.

Principal Assistant Secretary within the Ministry of National Security & Labour, Ms. Sharon Henry, outlined some of the areas that the sessions will cover, which include, profiling, search techniques and conflict resolution.

Minister Quinn-Leandro, in closing, said that the security guards were “critically important to education and a support to the schools’ administrations”.

She commended the Ministry of National Security and colleague Minister, Sen. the Hon. Dr. L. Errol Cort for his commitment to see these training sessions happen. The Education Minister also thanked the members of the Police Force and the Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force who will be conducting the sessions, especially Superintendent Clement Solomon and Major Eugene Phillip.

Just under 100 security guards will be trained at the end of the sessions. They were drawn primarily from two security firms on island -- Special Security Services and Competitive Security, as well as a few members of the government’s security service.

Really,, Jackie, how critical can security guards be for a learning institution?? Instead of coming up with ways to help motivate and make them more rounded young persons,we seem to be building prisons.Give me a dam brake.

100 security guards to be trained at government expense. Special Security and Competitive Security are private sector companies who earned contracts to deliver security service at secondary schools. Government pays for this service as well. Government pays twice: security service at schools and for the training for the guards they pay for. I understood that the security guards were to be trained and certified to a standard by a law that is on the books since 2006. Another deadline come and gone...
