UPP Rep Addresses Rising Crime in Rural South

Senator Winston WilliamsAntigua St. John’s – The United Progressive Party (UPP) representative for St. John’s Rural South, Senator Winston Williams has expressed shock and horror after a recent home invasion in Golden Grove resulted in a young man being shot and seriously injured.

Williams, who is currently off island, was appalled “at the brazen and wanton disregard for the life and property of decent, hardworking residents in the Rural South Community”, a press statement said.

Reportedly, the gunshot victim had come to the defence of his mother when he was shot in the upper body by a masked intruder. Senator Williams indicated that, following the incident, he has maintained close contact with the family and neighbours.

“Based on reports received, it would appear that the perpetrators may have also (been) involved in the poisoning of dogs in the area during the previous week,” Williams said. “Neighbours also reported seeing strange individuals lurking in the area.

“While there have been reports of masked intruders and increased break-ins throughout the St. John's Rural South area, this is the first in recent times where a resident has been shot. This is viewed as a serious development which must be taken seriously.”

Senator Williams is advising all residents of St. John's Rural South to exercise extreme caution and greater vigilance in their day to day activities and in securing their properties. Residents are also being encouraged to call the nearest police station or the emergency crime hotlines to report any suspicious activities.

Meantime, he has assured constituents that he is collaborating with the Minister of National Security, Dr. Errol Cort, to lead an aggressive crime prevention and awareness campaign in the community, and a joint law enforcement and community approach strategy will be unveiled shortly.

Senator Williams called for special prayers for the victim, who is so seriously injured that arrangements are now being made to fly him abroad for specialised medical treatment.

The UPP Representative also appealed to anyone with information on this heinous crime to report it to the relevant authorities so that the culprits can be brought to justice quickly.

Laughter is good for the soul, even when we're ceereeus®, and I think that all of us would greatly appreciate, 'the good old days' of the 1990's and prior. Crime is crime, wether it's blue collar(purse snatching, home invation, smoking a spliff, taking a can of sardine) or white collar(embezzli ng millions through foreign transactions, the Gov't cutting checks for non existing contracts, getting paid by the gov't while living in another Nation and not been productive) , YES, WE MUST GET TOUGH & CEEREEUS® ABOUT CRIME, ALL CRIMES,blue and white collar crime's.

When people can't get work and they have hungry children to feed, what for them to do? By the way you of all people talking about "heinous crimes"?

What you call tiefing millions of dollars on old power plant?

What you call tiefing millions on old fences?

You guys just sick me stomach!

If you add up the total amount of value of theft by all the prisoners in the local prison - it would be less that the tiefing of the Fence money and the Power Plant money! Life really unfair! And you now come to talk bout crime? Just take your pink shirt and leave!

You guys should lead by example!

definition of suspicious activities

Well they called and reported one which was labelled "the fencing scandal", however after an in house team reported laws were broken, those in authority (eg. Finance minister) claim there was no wrong doing. Since stealing and fraud is not wrong doing, perhaps the minister who was in charge of the projects, can provide the new definition.

And what are the residents doing when they see “strange individuals lurking”? These foreigners need to be held for the police, and if they resist, chop dem up! My cutlass done sharpen back and belly.
