VC Bird’s House Still Sits In Decay

VC Bird’s House Still Sits In DecayAntigua St. John’s - More than a year after the revelation of startling images documenting the state of the home of former prime minister VC Bird Sr. at Heroes Park, and the subsequent intervention of his grandson Vere Bird III in removing key images from the home, the Office of the Prime Minister is yet to make good on its promise to renovate the home and restore its historical value.

Caribarena visited the location some time ago and was greeted with a landmark in a worse state than it was more than 12 months ago.

A tour of the home saw empty walls where photographs documenting the historical achievements of the nation’s founding father and the milestone triumphs of the country as a whole were once prominently displayed.

The VC Bird House is over 100 years old and sits just steps away from the late PM’s final resting site in Heroes Park.

The pictures taken by Vere Bird III remain in his possession and he has vowed not to release them until notable effort is seen from the Prime Minister’s Office.
In February 2011, VC Bird III had indicated his intentions to restore the home on his own.

VC Bird’s House Still Sits In Decay

Caribarena has made several unsuccessful attempts to reach Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office, Mrs. Paula Frederick-Hunte, who was supposed to have been in charge of the restoration activities from the side of the PM.

There were two individuals at the location when Caribarena visited, and one was a security officer. When asked about the restoration activities, the lone individual who appeared to be working at the site said she had no idea of such a thing.

The items that once sat on the walls that enclosed the living quarters were scattered on dust-covered furniture and most of the historic images bore an increased volume of mould build-up.

Organise some fund raisers and get the ball rolling to renovate the home of the late VC BIRD.Form a commitee to over see the entire renovations. If the Bird family want to be a part of it that should be okay. This should become a local and visitors attraction.Char ge a small stipend to visit the house. The money collected should be used for the up keep of the home.

Baldwin should be ashamed of himself. He spent so much of tax payers money to rename Buggy Peek, Mt. Obama. What the hell had Obama ever don for Antigua? Instead of throwing away the money so foolishly, he should have invested it in the VC Bird Museum.

The world is watching in disbelief. Where is your national pride Baldwin?

where is our pride?

#13 fnpsr » 2012-06-16 01:04

I am still not surprised. Like many issues in Antigua nothing ever gets solved. Promises are made for the day to appease the people and by time the next issue comes up, the unsolved issues are forgotten. It was December 10, 2010, in an Article by SA Dixon, titled, “National Shame Sir VC Bird Dishonored” that this issue first came up. Some were embar**ed and promised to take care it. It is now 18 months later and we are still in the same position. Where is our pride?

I invite bloggers to re-read the article and the many comments at the following link:

Why do the writers insist on using the term father of the nation and papa bird, those terms leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, i really wish you people will stop using such ridiculous and backward terms.

Yep, it was the government who stopped Vere Bird 111 froom taking some of his grandfather's portraits from the house. B3 was only interested in preserving items (i.e portraits etc..) that was his grandfathers, for the benefit of the history of Antigua & Barbuda. If my memory serves me correctly, it was the government who had pledged to restore the property and transformed it into a museum whereby different memorabilas of our national heroes would be on display for our citizens and guests alike can view. I guess that venture never materialised. Comparing the VC Birds bust to his residence is not a fair comparison. Government would only appear to show interest in taking care of the bust because its right in the general public's view, they would'nt dare take the chance of not maintaining it; they would only create more objections for themselves, unlike the residence which is out of town, their interest is the total opposite. Out of sight, out of mind.

"Yep": so destroying a work of art by repainting it badly in color, in your view is good care? What happened with that bust at west bus station is another example of our disrespect of our heroes and art.

Where is Lester “last legs” Bird? Where are the AT&LU and the A&B WU? Where is the UPP? Where is “Smack Down” Browne? Where is VC3? Where is the PM? Where are the serial ALP marchers? Where are the Antiguans? It is high time for the PM to step in and correct this affront to the national patrimony.

OK. so if the property belongs to Government why did a member of the Bird Family be allowed to takeremove property from the premesis. The VC Bird bust at the West Bus Station has received the best care under the current administration so I dont agree with ANU. The items in the house should be sent to the museum and the house sold. That is the best option at this point as the Government bot ALP and UPP has a bad record of upkeep buildings.

hmmm, apologies I missed the latter portion of your comment.
Let me add though that even if it was not owned by government(it is), it should be, due to its national importance. Truly time we started acting like we have respect for this nation.

V C Bird's House Still Sits In Decay

#5 Anu » 2012-06-15 09:42

Although the above caption is sad, truth be told, im not surprise. It was this same government who supported one of their mouth piece by the name of Dr Mansoor who allegedly said " I believe that that the history of VC Bird should be thrown out in the dust bin of history and i make no reservations about that." The actions of the government clearly shows that they clearly supports Mr Mansoors analogy. Smh............

If the govt is unable to maintain the property at least the items should be placed in the care of the museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The staff at the museum would be experienced in handling artifacts - this should not be left up to a 'housekeeper'. This also begs the question why V. Bird III was allowed to remove articles from the house. Did he document and report what he removed?
At the end of the day all govt. institutions and offices suffer from lack of maintenance and are in a run down state under both administrations . I suggest that the Birds get together and fund the upkeep of the property until we get our act together

hmmm the property belongs to the government and so that negates the rest of your comment. There was (perhaps still in place) a tour guide hired by the government to show the place to visitors. There was (may still be) a housekeeper being paid by the government. There was a plan in place for a National Heroes exhibit within a museum to be built at the site (see www.caribarena.com/antigua/news/latest/10881-national-shame-sir-vc-bird-dishonoured.html. In an article titled Family Salvages Some of Bird's Possession, VCB III states:
Quote:
They never told us anything about restoring anything... it’s not our house," he said. "It’s a government house. It wasn’t his personal property… he lived in it though. They should be taking care of everything up there Read more: http://www.caribarena.com/antigua/news/latest/97041-family-salvages-some-of-birds-possessions.html#ixzz1xraFCzWF
Our actions through our disrespect of history, will prevent this nation from developing because we will never learn from our past triumphs and mistakes.

I wonder!! who is the current owner of this property is it the Government or someone in the Bird family?? I dont understsand why the Government would pump money in restoring a house which it does not own when money is tight and civil servants cannot get paid. If it does belong to the Government and somehow the money can be found to restore and have the property used as a museum then that idea I can agree with.

Who is the legal owner of the house and why are they not maintaining it? It must have been a loveless and joyless place to be abandoned in this way.
