Cort Calls For Caribbean Conference On Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking workshopAntigua St John's - National Security Minister Sen. Dr. L. Errol Cort has proposed that a conference addressing Human Trafficking in the Caribbean should be held.

Dr Cort put forward the idea during Thursday’s closing ceremony for the “Trainers Session: Sensitizing Peers about Human Trafficking” workshop and volunteered Antigua & Barbuda to host the symposium.

The proposed Conference would feature discussions on the challenges that the region faces as a result of human trafficking, as well as the much needed dialogue on the issue at the highest level, a press release attributed to the minister.

Dr. Cort also disclosed that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) would soon mount a Labour Migration study in Antigua.

During his remarks, Minister Cort focused on the victims of human trafficking saying that there was a need to put measures in place to look after them.

Rui Oliveira Reis, IOM’s Regional Coordination Officer, said that the IOM recognised that Antigua & Barbuda is committed to combating human trafficking, and as such, they have seen significant progress on the island.

He added that the IOM would continue to support the island in this area, as well as other areas such as Border Management Control and Labour and Migration.

The workshop, held by the Immigration Department in collaboration with the IOM, focused on training local trainers who would then be able to train their peers and members of the community in the fight against human trafficking.

Chissey Mueller, the IOM facilitator for the workshop, had positive reviews of the three-day session, saying that weaknesses were improved upon and strengths enhanced.

There is human trafficing in your own back yard, if you cant see that, you are really clueless. Let immigration officers do their work so that we do not have a sea of non national receptionist and janitors and other unskilled labourers flooding the market for these entry level positions. Let the latina and guyanese and jamaican mistresses of high governement officials go home and regain the self esteem they have lost by engaging in social prostitution.

another conference?????

#3 Dessalines » 2012-06-08 13:04

another conference- another meeting - another committe another sub committe - how about a focus group - or my favorite a paid consultant -
Why cant we get things done in antigua. We're only 108 sq miles with 85,000 people. Why can't the 'sponsors' of these girls be targeted and reigned in like Barbados do. How about imposing a visa restriction on travellers from the offending countries? That way we can weed out the strippers, hookers and lowlifes that we see on popeshead street nightly. Do we really need a conference to do this?

SATAN CAN'T CORRECT SIN

#1 THE GODFATHER » 2012-06-08 07:54

Yes Dr. Cort a very important issue indeed, always want to catch criminals, but how about elected political criminality, stealing public money. There is never much concern about public money, and that too is a crime.

Everyone knows, both past and present officials are under scrutiny, and there are many ways to rob the public purse. How can Satan correct sin? He can't!
