Lights Out for Sporting Venues

Lights Out for Sporting VenuesAntigua St John's - The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has announced its intention to disconnect electricity at a number of sporting venues on June 7.

A release issued Thursday described the move as part of APUA's energy conservation policy. As part of APUA's efforts to engage all stakeholders in the process, the Office of the Minister of State with responsibility for Sports scheduled a meeting to discuss the provision of utility services to government-owned and supported sports venues.

Notices were issued via the print, radio, and television inviting clubs, associations, and management groups who are already managing or intending to manage a facility to participate in a meeting to discuss management of facilities, with the main focus on energy conservation.

The notices also advised that in the absence of representation, complimentary utility services at facilities would be disconnected as a part of the overall plan to conserve energy and its overall plan to cut waste across government operations.

In this regard, the Office of the Minister of State with responsibility for Sports will advise APUA to disconnect electrical services, where they are provided, from facilities for which no representation has been made either at the meeting, or within seven days of this notice.

The release noted that if no representation is made to the Ministry of Sports by Thursday, June 7, at the close of the work day, the facilities will have their electrical services, where they exist, disconnected, and/or steps taken to engage the support of organisations to manage them.

The facilities which fall under this review are as follows:

cutting lights at youth centers.... are you guys for real? How about you use some logic and turn off the Chinese street lights at all the beaches that are killing endangered baby sea tutles. when a baby sea turtle hatches it crawls up out the sand and then heads towards the brightest thing it can see which is usually the ocean waves reflecting the moonlight, but now on jabberwalk and some of the south/west side beaches these turtles hatch and crawl to the new brightest thing around... the Chinese STREET LIGHTS!! there, they crawl around in circles under these very bright street lights trying desperately to find water and are instead getting run over, flattened, killed by cars on the road, and if they are lucky enough to survive the gauntlet of cars and trucks they will eventually die of dehydration from crawling around for a day or two in the hot sun. 1 + 1 IS 2. how simple is that. act like you have a tiny bit of sense in your head or compassion in your heart.

Never mind the Sporting Venues perhaps Baldwin Spencer can explain why every weekend we are experiencing multiple power cuts, it says volumes about the state of these Chinese generators!

Oh wait I forgot, they are not new and only two generators are currently working. Fortunate for Spencer the purchase of the generators were approved by Parliament...oh wait the purchase wasn't approved was it!

The mere fact no one came forward from these communities is indicative of the waste of the electricity.

hidden burden due to waste

#8 tenman » 2012-06-01 12:25

It then means that if the average monthly usage is 300 Kwh, Antiguan's (Not Barbudans since they get a little over 50% discount since they pay 53 cents ec per kwh since before 2004) pay monthly some $97 EC more for electricity than Jamaica. Annually this will mean a over 1100 EC difference. In comparison to Barbados, this means we pay some 1800 EC more than Barbadians. Basically the Antiguan house hold pays at least 1100 annually to pay for APUA's inefficiency. No wonder the commercial sector is going bankrupt due to this waste.

cost of electricity

#7 tenman » 2012-06-01 12:10

Perhaps APUA will take the time to explain why the cost of electricity per kwh is 44 cents US (1.19 EC per kwh) in Antigua, around 25 cents us (67 cents EC in Barbados; and 32 cents USD (86 cents EC) in Jamaica? Will they continue with the lie that its all because of high fuel prices? Fuel prices don't affect Barbados and Jamaica? Strange thing, Jamaica is arguing on the need to switch to Natural gas to lower its costs while APUA wrongly argues here that switching to a basically old malfunctioning power plant will lower our bills.

** Figures for Barbados and Jamaica obtained from Quote:

while the one for Antigua obtained from the latest bill

APUA is an embar**ment

#6 Observer Overseas » 2012-06-01 10:15

APUA is, and has always been, an embar**ment to the Government and people of Antigua & Barbuda. Although it enjoys a monopoly on the supply of electricity we have the highest rates in the Caribbean, and the quality of service is among the worst. Obviously, it is not accountable to anyone as no audited accounts have been published since around 2004. Everyone says they are losing money and is cash strapped, but where is the evidence.

It is a just a matter of time before the Government is forced to cut it loose. That is privatize it, like in the rest of the civilized world . The sooner it does it the better.

People First?

#5 Judge Dredd » 2012-06-01 09:08

What a joke of a government. Cut off the lights from Sports facilities used by our youths and leave them idle in the dark. This is a great strategy. Meanwhile the abandoned car park and Government buildings all over St. John's have their lights and air conditioners on 24/7.
And we voted for these people.

Yet they keep the lights on at the failed car park! Isn[t that a waste of money also? While those hundreds of lights remain on, Antiguans are having their electricity disconnected for $300. Disconnect all the sport facilities APUA and then all of Antigua will reap the consequences of your act. The devil still finds work for idle hands to do.

What really is going on here?

#3 young analyst » 2012-06-01 07:13

i think someone really need to come and tell the people of this country what is going with this cutting off of sports field lights. First thing whose light they belong to, government or apua, secondly who is responsible for managing else lights. I am not seeing why apua going cut off lights they themselves installed for the govenment, some mix up somewhere, what really is going on because its not really looking good for the youths already and these lights are needed at the facilities hence their placement in the first place.

Hen you disconnect the lights on the fields and complexes where our children play what are they suppose to do? What alternative ctivities do you have planned to occupy their attention, interest and youthful energies? I remind us all of the saying, "the devil finds work for idle hands"
Didn't PM Dr, Dr decry Clarvis for cutting the very lights? Is he afraid of Clarvis or was that just another act of deception?
Anyways, with the complexes plunged into darkness will we see the savings on our electricity bills?
