No Resolution of Street Name Disagreement

Street Name DisagreementAntigua St John's - A disagreement over two community groups' erection of two different signs on one street has yet to be resolved at the government level, and will now be forwarded to the Ministry of Legal Affairs for its consideration.

Meetings at the ministerial level have not yielded any agreement on a name for the street.

Responding to public criticism over the mix-up and subsequent lack of resolution, the government issued the following release indicating its position on the matter.

The Local Government Department is the legal body charged with the responsibility to execute the naming of streets in Antigua & Barbuda.

This process is advanced in collaboration with various government and community based organizations (CBO’s), to ensure accuracy.

The issue of the street naming is a development matter which requires synergy among government departments to include the Development Control Authority (DCA), who under their legal mandate work closely with identified community groups which comprised residents deemed knowledgeable about the area under review.

To advance the process in an efficient, transparent and accountable manner, the Local Government Department developed and issued clear guidelines, which along with consultations between the department and the communities, would eventually end with the street being named, and officially marked on the survey’s map allowing for the erection of the signage.

Standardized, comprehensive and easy to follow guidelines were also developed to aid the implementation process, to assist the utilities authority, post office, emergency services and the general public to locate and reference people and properties in the respective communities.

This was effectively and successfully achieved in almost 100 percent of our projects. We are disappointed that the Clarkes Hill community did not benefit from this process.

We wish, therefore to place on record that the names of the streets in the Clarkes Hill community were named before the project outlined was implemented in 2010.

We acknowledge our involvement during the period in seeking to rectify the situation, which in this particular matter, include site visits by the Surveys Department and the Development Control Authority (DCA), in an effort to investigate and settle the impasse between the two community groups who have erected separate signage on the same street.

To date, an amicable resolution with the parties involved has not been reached despite meetings held at the level of the minister.

We have therefore forwarded the matter for the consideration and advice from the Ministry of Legal Affairs.

The Local Government Department remains available and committed to assist this process where needed and we are optimistic that this matter should find closure soonest.
