Tourist Rescued at Sea

jet skiAntigua St John's - An American tourist was rescued at sea on Friday by Coast Guard officers who found him 12 miles off the coast of Antigua.

He was on a jet ski he rented from a local merchant. It ran out of fuel sometime late Thursday afternoon. The man was found adrift early Friday.

Police spokesman William Holder said the force had not received any missing person’s reports fitting those circumstances.

“We understand that he rented the jet ski locally, and he was stranded, but there was no report on the books of a missing person,” Holder said.

The 32 year old, whose identity was not released, was found gripping the machine, Coast Guard officials said. The last time he was seen was just off the coast of Johnson’s Point at around 5 pm on Thursday.

The jet ski was rented from an operator on Turner’s Beach.

The rescue was carried out with the help of Coast Guard officers from Martinique.

surely you can't be that dumb " iamajustsaying" to think that because the tourist went further than he should have, that it was ok for the jet ski owner, to leave him at sea to die....surely that's not what you're saying. I refuse to belive that you are that ignorant. This kind of attitude is the primary reason why things in antigua are getting worse and not better.

'I'm just saying' some people should be sent back to school to learn common sense.

Okay, when exactly did police spokesman William Holder and company find out that this person was stranded on the jet ski, before or after the rescue? Let's assume that the coast guard stumbled upon the floating jet ski and the tourist on it by chance, why did the person who rented it out not notify the police of a missing person when the tourist failed to return it that same night? I surmised, from the renter's lack of concern, that the man was out there on the ocean for more than just a joy ride.

what would stop a tourist from renting a jetski and going beyond the point and time stipulated by the operator. How do we know that he did not rent the jetski and proceeded to go too far out. Yes the operator should have been more alert but lets not just blame the operator here.

Bad business management and carelessness from the business operator. Someone's life was at risk; there need to be an investigation.
The Government and ministry of Tourism need to set regulation regarding the min amount of fuel show be is a rented jet ski. I say no less that a 1/2 tank. although some may say no less that a 3/4 tank.

An international insident almost

#2 In the business » 2012-05-26 10:24

We are an international insident just waiting to happen. None of the jet ski operators have even the smallest consern for the tourists they rent to. They are not insured, licenced, or regulated in any way. Many do not even have a cell phone to call for help if there is an emergency let alone a chase boat for a rescue.
Can you immagine the headlines when a tourist is killed?
We have been warned... what will we do?
