Ryan Adamant About Trespassing Issue

Businessman George RyanAntigua St John's - Prominent local businessman George Ryan is stressing his right to deny residents of the Cedar Valley community the use of a portion of unoccupied land.

A resident concerned about the situation described Ryan’s move to “cut a ditch” to separate the public area from his private lands as a “vigilante style” and “high-handed deed.”

“There is an interesting development going on up in the Cedar Valley community," the resident said. "If you turn on the road labelled Wild Orchid Drive and follow it to the end, you will see prominent businessman George Ryan vigilante-style cutting a ditch across a road leading to at least eight homes, which he claims passes over lands that he owns."

He also pointed out that some of the homes and residents being affected have been using this access point for almost 15 years.

“APUA has erected posts along this road, and PWD has cut and paved this road with marl,” the resident said. “There is an 82-year-old lady who lives in one of these homes. God forbid if there is a fire or need for ambulance to come to these homes."

But Ryan is adamant that his decision not to allow people to drive on his land was just, and said he had been in talks with the residents in that area for more than a year-and-a-half.

Former parliamentary representative of St John's Rural East Dr Errol Cort is also aware of the situation, Ryan said.

He noted that he has also been in talks with the senator about the matter, as recently as Monday.

“Their road to their houses is clearly defined," Ryan said. "And they are not supposed to be walking on my land. My land is my land. Nobody has any right to be cutting road through my land. I have been trying to get them to work with me for quite a while. I even spent $5,000 clearing up the road that they are supposed to use.”

He said the road is clearly named, and since he bought his land from the state, no one has the right to it but him. If a portion of it is wanted for road purposes, he said it could be purchased back from him for that purpose, but until that happens, he will not tolerate trespassing.

Ryan noted that the people in the area are accessing their homes from the wrong end, and if they were to use the other end, they would find that his land is not in any way hindering access to their homes.

On Tuesday morning, Dr Cort, Development Control Authority inspector Kareem Mack, and the Public Works Department (PWD) visited the site. It was reaffirmed that the land belongs to Ryan, and he has all right to take the action that he did to keep people off it.

Ryan said he hopes the confirmation from the authorities, in the presence of the residents, would bring closure to the matter.

ANTIGUAN WOMAN ET ALL (who are against this), this is one issue I disagree with you on. Mr. Ryan is a good example of what a corporate citizen should be. The man has given back much to this country. Its his land. If government wishes to purchase it they have the option to compulsory acquire it. Failing that, persons need to respect the fact that its Ryan's land.

All these commentators using their fingers to think.. No matter how long you drive or walk over a private property, whether before or after possession, the owner has all right to cease any act of trespassing once there is a prescribed accessway.. The trespassers or developers are responsible for their own welbeing. Mr Ryan is right because if noone takes a stand, he will be disadvantaged for however long. This should not be looked at in a religious and or political sense. Nevertheless the government should feel the responsibility to fix roads in developed areas once they have given the approval through the DCA to develop lands without first insisting people who are selling lands provide proper access. I am not a friend of Ryan, dont know the man but people need to research before attacking people. Make informed comments

Every time there is an issue, you have to look at the underlining cause, as here. The problem, as I see it, is a failure on the part of the authorities to adequately plan for the necessary infrastructure. Had this been done, we would not be here today. When you are creating communities, you have to make sure that the appropriate infrastructure is in place before construction begins. This includes, but is not limited to, roads, light, telephone, sewer, water, cable and the like. Additionally, some easement of property may have been necessary for public access.

“Let’s fix the little things before we attempt to fix the big things.”

Just the facts

#14 Sherlock » 2012-04-25 14:01

1)When Ryan bought the land from Lester (not government)10 years ago, the residents were using this land as the only access route for 6 years prior. 2)Ryan xroxe the law by digging the trench since he xxx xxx xxxx DCA approval (even if it is his land). 3) The great "compromise" Ryan agreed to was getting money for the land from government which further enhances access to his own large land holding in the area.

#12 Race Card » 2012-04-25 11:37

Why did you play the race card on this. What does a person color have to do with this? A person is protecting his land and residents are protecting their right to access their home. It is a matter which the government needs to solve which can be done easily with civil negotiations between all parties involved.

Isn't the law clear that a public access becomes legal after a period of time no matter whether it is private or public land. 15 years seems to a long time.

The access road that Mr. Ryan claims he paid to clear is not useable especially with a sprinkle of rain on it. This government can't afford to marl the road he claims he cut so it is nothing more than a cow path. Not once has Mr. Ryan in the past spoken to any of the residents. He did what he did because of the type of person he is and will always remain.

Quick question to Mr. Ryan. What did he do with the top soil he dug out when he graded the Road?

Well well you can see who really are the wicked ones here based on some of these comments. Evil thinks as evil does. If the man spent his money to fix the proper road so that people can have access to their homes how in the world can he be wicked. Every body feel dey have ah "right to everything all to the owner" and if people keep bending over backwards for some people they will have you bending over the rest of your lives.

So Mr. Ryan you right. Is cause you black why the people and dem want to have you so.

@Dr. Brushy. Instead of acting all self righteous and high and mighty you should look at yourself cause from your comment alone you seem to be the one that needs church most of all.

When a Syrian business man acquired lands in a part of Weatherhill, he planted his fence post and pulled fencing wire to re-establish his boundary, in which the other land owners with the are was trying to underhand acquire. No one is complaining, but when a black man, spends $5,000.00 to fix the original road, and close of the illegal access across his lands, we call him wicked??? You can tell who really are wicked here.. the bias commentators of Caribarena.

#5 Family Guy » 2012-04-25 07:46

Cort should have asked Ryan for more time for his constituents until a proper road is provided them!

V. C. Bird Sr. would have sent a bulldozer to repair the road and quietly asked Ryan to "Cool Out"!

Then Ryan expects people to patronize his businesses?

If Ryan is so "prominent" and "successful" why does he need to act like this? I wonder if he is aware that the sins of the father go to the generations following? As for Dr. Cort - we all know he's afraid of Ryan!
