Security Forces Forge Closer Ties

Dr. Cort-in-BarbadosAntigua St John's - Minister of National Security and Labour Dr Errol Cort held a high level meeting on Thursday with Francis Forbes, head of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and Grantley Watson, Regional Security Coordinator for the Regional Security System (RSS).

Thursday’s meeting in Barbados was intended to forge a closer working relationship between these two primary security agencies in the region.

“As chairman of both security institutions, I am in a unique position to facilitate constructive dialogue leading to an enhanced relationship between these two critical organisations,” Dr Cort said.

This is the first time the same minister has assumed the chairmanship of the Caricom Council of Ministers responsible for National Security and Law Enforcement (CONSLE), which has oversight of IMPACS, while also serving as chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Regional Security System.

Minister Cort said he was very optimistic coming out of the meeting, and is looking forward to the planned high-level technical meeting between both institutions in the near future.

This technical meeting is expected to produce a detailed working document that would govern the collaboration between the two agencies. The Memorandum of Understanding, he says, should be finalised and ready for presentation at the next Caricom Heads of Government meeting in July.

On a recent visit to Antigua, Forbes said he looked forward to IMPACS developing a closer working relationship with the RSS, as they were in the “same business of ensuring that regional security does not lapse”.

Both Forbes and Watson already share common backgrounds, as both are former commissioners of police in their respective countries of Jamaica and Barbados, and have firsthand, indepth knowledge of the security issues facing the region.
