More Squatters in Yorks

More Squatters in YorksAntigua St John's - Yet another set of squatters has settled in the Yorks community, with the construction of a 10'x10' structure on a portion of unoccupied land.

Built from wooden crate scraps, the structure appears to provide shelter for at least two young men.

It was built as the Development Control Authority (DCA) continues to devise a plan to address the escalating squatter situation problem nationwide. Details of the plan have not been released.

Caribarena spoke with neighbours around the new squatters, and they reported that at least one of the new arrivals had been arrested for assaulting a female homeowner in the area, and had been ordered by a magistrate not to take up residence there again.

The new construction so far has no roof or bathroom. A tarpaulin is in place to keep out the rain and sun, and there is no utility service connected.

Acting Chief Town & Country Planner for the DCA Frederick Southwell said he is aware of the situation, and someone from his office will investigate the matter.

Residents said they have made several attempts to contact constituency parliamentary representative John Maginley, but have been unsuccessful.

Maginley had recently said his office was having little luck in addressing the situation, as the organisations involved seemed to not be in sync.

A recent survey by the DCA revealed at least 13 squatter houses in the area.

Well said, Buss. It is cute these days to champion the transgressions of the youth. We make all types of excuses for them and try to appear as though we are such great humanitarians.. .... that is until it becomes our turn to feel it. It is time for us to start using the law book and not the heart book. That is what is wrong with our country, no respect for rules and laws. And the youth are flouting these, all with our misguided help.

Too much young people in this nation are LAZY, good for nothing, HOPELESS and downright WUTLISS...so dont tell me no stupidness bout UPP and MINISTER when you are all breeding them yourself to be like that!!!

SPEED BUMP according to the Daily Observer it was DCA itself that stamped the approval letters for the (some) York "squatters" which allowed them to get utilities. (see www.antiguaobserver.com/?p=66317). The article also states that they are on private land from information garnered from the recent DCA chairman aka election troublemaker

Since when squatting is a problem in Antigua? Seem like it just depend on where the squatting is. In the country side, young men have been squatting for years. But the residence never have any problem with it. A good % of the residence in the country side all started with squatters even before roads, electricity and water were installed. This is exactly what my child hood was around until I became a grown man when I start hearing about land surveying and so on. But these were virgin government land.

The article said that it was on "on occupied land". It did not say private or government property? What is the law really?

#6 Smoke n Mirrors » 2012-04-08 16:43

thanks to the UPP we now have squatters. Thanks to the UPP we have people so desperate & distraught they have to subject themselves to this harsh life. It's the fault of the UPP. Dr BS said he would turn Antigua into Haiti & is prolific prophecy has come true. Things just cannot get worst. The people of Yorks are the victims/pawns of Dr BS's horrible plan.

They nearly sell off all Antigua land. This has led to squatting. They sell off estate Montero to Chinese to build community for their people.

Since the leaders love them so much, Why the government don't ask ambassador Shoul and the Chinese to build some houses to help ease the problem and give squatters some rights to be under a decent shelter?

@Blessed love. since you have so much compassion and compassion in your heart why dont you take them to live with you? Many of these squatters take up residence in this county illegally. If they are unable to help themselves they should go back to their country of origin. If there are Antiguans then some family member should take them or they can go to Poor House. Government doesnt print money, its taxpayers who keep the Government afloat. Can the taxpayers afford to be be taxed further to help illegals. Send them home

DCA knows about the Squatters, they tear down other buildings without permits, why dont they just get warrants and close down the properties, and how come most of the Squatters have electricity?

enough is enough Chef understands times are hard but this won't fly. it is simply not your land so you are trespassing. That is against the LAW.
Now maybe Vere" brown" shirt or is it brown nose can stop chasing alcohol on good Friday and deal with what the law says he needs to deal with. like these squatters , anyway good people of Yorks chef suggest you get a good lawyer, or a fire permit and burn that collection of garbage it is a public health hazard and yet again your government has failed to protect you and the public health and safety.
for the record chef does not encourage anyone setting fire to anything accidentally or otherwise with out the required permits in place. Chef is just saying that this picture shows some old pallets that constitute pollution and fire hazard.. :-* :-* :-* :-*
