Union Head Wants Minimum Wage Increase

Union Head Wants Minimum Wage IncreaseAntigua St John's - General Secretary of the Antigua & Barbuda Free Trade Union Stafford Joseph wants to see a revision of Antigua & Barbuda's minimum wage.

He noted that the minimum wage should be reviewed every two years, but the last review was done in 2008.

Joseph accused the business community of using its influence, to the detriment of employees.

To support his claims, the general secretary produced a letter from 2002 from the Chamber of Commerce to the Minister of Labour which cited the US and Canada, along with developing countries in the Caribbean, as having adopted a tier system of valuing labour, rather than a fixed monthly limit.

This would mean that employees could be paid an hourly minimum, rather than a monthly one.

“Having regard for the different tiers of labour categorizations contained in the current Minimum (basic wage) Order, we would recommend that it is normal in the free market economies, to have market focus rather than regulators determine the correct value for labour, above a single stated minimum,” the Chamber said in its letter.

Joseph said the letter supported claims he made last weekend on a local radio programme about the revised labour code that was supposedly shelved since the Antigua Barbuda Business Alliance was formed.

“Business places keep using their influences to change things… they used that as a springboard to exploit people," Joseph said. "The (labour) code should be a balanced document. People don't know what influence the business sector has on certain decisions.”

The general secretary noted that the minimum wage order committee is structured like the labour board, with representation from labour unions, employers, and the government.

He said, “Back then, the Chamber wrote a letter to the powers that be asking for a meeting on their proposal on the minimum wage,” similar to what was done in 2011 by the Business Alliance resulting in the stalemate of the implementation of the revised labour code. "Government seems to be making decisions based on request of business places and not what’s best for the workers.”

Joseph noted the cost of living in Antigua & Barbuda has risen considerably over the past four years, and it is high time for the minimum wage to be revised.

To date, he said, security guards still earn $7.50 per hour while overseeing millions in property and equipment, and skilled workers like cooks and preschool teachers earn the same thing.

Staff with a five-day workweek who fall into these categories have it the worst, the trade unionist explained, since they earn no more than $300 weekly, or $1,200 per month, and have to feed themselves and often their families on this salary.

“Workers are exploited by those unscrupulous employers,” he said. “The role of the government is to be fair, objective and impartial.”

The Capitalist

#7 Stafford Joseph » 2012-02-24 08:12

Being a capitalist has nothing to do with whether or not an individual is wealthy. It has to do with do with the individual's thought patterns Hence any one who utilises his/her wealth to exploit another, or anyone who choose and encourage such thought patterns are deemed to be capitalists. Hence it will be totally unfair to brand all investors , business men/women, politicians as capitalists, or to blame all of them for the current global economic crisis. I don't believe globally, that unscrupulous investors, professionals, business men/women, politicians and workers, are the to be blamed for the current global financial strangulation. Most times, the unscrupulous ones are in the position to make final decisions for the populace. STANd up for the Truth!!!!

Why Blame Workers and not Management

#6 Stafford Joseph » 2012-02-24 01:46

A worker's is responsible to ensure that he/she gives a fair day's labour for a fair day's pay, and the Union's duty is to promote and encourage this.. The Employer is responsible for managing his/her business wisely. Had the worker not, through blood ,sweat, muscle and starvation wages, create the wealth for the employer? How else would the employer become a millionaire? The worker should not be blamed if the employer chooses to squander or mismanages his/her wealth. Further, the workers should not be blamed if the employer lacks economic literacy. Many of our political figures lack economic too. Hence the reason for the current state of affairs globally. The global economic crisis was not brought about by workers. It was brought about by avaricious and selfish businessmen and women and politicians who view workers as commodities. Unscrupulous employers and politicians who are presently feeling the wrath of God ( Book of James Ch 5 KJV), must atone for the evil committed against the people. It is essential that they be AT - ONE with God, before any positive changes are realised. Praises to THE ALL KNOWING; THE ALL SEEING !!!!

my take

Stafford' argument make sense in terms of an adjustment (not in the wage rate) is needed because the cost of living has indeed increased since 2008. I also agree that the minimum wage should be based on type of work. However increasing the minimum wage will not provide the comfort persons are seeking. The act itself will further increase the cost of living perhaps by even more than the increase itself. Businesses will simply try to pass on the cost. We need to find real ways of dealing with the cost of living with the chief area being dealing with government waste. Sadly the unions are not on board with the need for such action and prefer instead knee ** actions like raising the minimum wage. As far as the socialism thing about seeing investors/busin ess people as the enemy, I find it ridiculous because its basically stabbing yourself.

Capitalism and Labour

#4 Stafford Joseph » 2012-02-23 13:37

Capitalism from its inception, has imposed a separation between the economy and morals, in order to transform work into merchandise and workers into beasts of burden. For us to deny the glaring truth that we exist within a political economy, is tantamount to denying that we exist. It is undoubtedly clear, that the only moving force which a political economy recognizes, are avarice and the war between the avaricious competition. Quoted from the book - Black Economics by Jawanza Kunjufu, "The American economist define full employment somewhere between four and seven percent. This is designed so that capitalists will always have a labour reserve to draw upon, so that wages can be kept at a lower scale, and they will always have access to additional workers". Hence my Brothers and Sisters, " It is wise to seek to go behind the changes and see the unchanging behind the changing". All Praise and Power to the Most High GOD. FEAR HIM ONLY!!!!!!!!

What planet is Stafford living on? How can one increase salaries when there are businesses closing? Stafford should be focusing on productivity of employees instead of bleedin a dead corpse. If you increase salaries, the business sector will hirer fewer employees. Perhaps the union can then start hiring the unemployed and give them better salaries. He seems surprised that the business sector influences government. He should come back to earth & realize that it is businesses that generate funds to run the country.

Look at the roads, the schools the hospital, mental home and tons of facilities around Antigua you would think that with that quality we would be firing politicians dailey, amazing! One election a politician had a party in Rural East. I heard a voter say he voting for ________ cause he buy them a case of beer. true story.

Mark them workers

#1 BEEF » 2012-02-23 05:38

Sometimes we as workers are our worst enemies. IT IS MY FIRM BELIEF THAT THE NEGATIVE PLIGHT OF WORKERS WILL ONLY BE ADDRESSED WHEN WORKERS "MARK" THOSE POLITICIANS WHO ADOPT POLICIES THAT ARE NOT FAIR TO THEM. When I say "mark them" I mean NOT TO SUPPORT THEM POLITICALLY. How can it ever make sense that I am going to support a politician with my vote, so he/she will make their life better, when they adopt policies to make my life harder? Makes absolutely no sense to me. WAKE UP WORKERS AND REALIZE THE POWER YOU HAVE WITH YOUR VOTE. DO NOT SUPPORT POLITICIANS WHO DO NOT ADOPT POLICIES THAT ARE FAIR TO YOU. Do not be allow yourselves to be defined by "a colour". Realize that securing the best for your family is as important as any other family in this world. Praise God.
