Million Dollar Loan Is Forward Thinking

Minister of Finance Dr Errol Cort says the M$81 loan government secured from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) will act as a precautionary relief buffer to the 2009 budget, if in fact an economic crisis hits home.

“If there is a major down turn in the economy the projected tax revenue for 2009 would not be available for use, business importation bills would not be as high which will in turn reduce tax revenues. So government would then need a buffer if it’s to continue the many social programs,” Dr Cort said.

The Finance Minister says the concessionary loan will be repaid within 15-20 years.

“We don’t do mere lip service, when we talk about sound plans they come to fruition,” The economic minister said.

He adds it’s indicative for the forward thinking of this government not to wait until the crisis arises to find solutions.

That the finance minister said is the reason for pre-empting possible issues.

The money will also go towards the local unemployment program, where the unemployed will be given a monthly stipend.

To also ease the squeeze, if the need arise the government is willing to lower the percentage for income tax which a small percentage of the populace pays.

Any initiative by a government to impliment stratagies or put contingincies in place to avert or cushion a economic crisis, is always a move in the right direction. However, is saddling the nation with yet another debt, huge debt, the right answer right now? Has the government satisfied itself that it has fine tuned its' tax collection machinery? or what about ways to make the running of government more efficient and cost effective? Have we looked further afield to market our tourism product? This loan is a short solution to long term problem. We have to be careful not dig a hole to fill a hole. How will I as a citizen be affected by this loan? It must be repaid and by the people. We must try and find ways to try and cushion the recession. Sometimes just throwing money at a problem is not the answer.
