Mixed Reaction on CPC

Mixed Reaction on CPCAntigua St. John's - Local poultry farmers seem to be speaking with a discordant voice in their response to the proposal by an American company for a multi-million dollar investment into the local poultry industry.

Ciboney Poultry Company (CPC), is proposing to spend as much as US$70 million dollars in a poultry operation to meet the local demand as well as for export.

President of the Antigua and Barbuda Poultry Association, Uriah Sheppard, said the association has held a series of meetings with the principals of Zacky Farms, owners of CPC, who want to invest in a poultry operation that encompasses all aspects of the poultry industry.

One major hurdle faced by the investors is their stipulation that the local poultry farmers who now have ongoing concerns should dovetail their operations into the larger American owned operation. A figure of US $1 Million is said to have been committed to compensate farmers who would be affected by this decision.

Sheppard said discussions have hammered out areas of agreement between the local poultry farmers and the investors. He also said that the association had three key concerns; the investors must detail their arrangement in writing, the association members must first approve the tentative agreement and, the company will not engage in egg production.

The association seems to be leaning in favour of giving tentative approval for the project, however, not all poultry farmers are in agreement with the establishment of the project in Antigua. Two prominent farmers, one of whom asked not to be identified, have said that they strongly oppose giving the American group the green-light to establish the project. They feel that it will sound the death-knell for the local industry and wipe-out poultry farmers who have been engaged in the industry for many years.

Farm owner, Philip Abbott, said he believes that the government would make a critical blunder if it went ahead and gave approval to the project. “It’s a serious matter, and this whole idea of them bringing in a foreign company to monopolise the whole industry is going to work against the government, it’s going to work against the country, it’s going to work against the industry so it’s a crazy, crazy idea and I don’t know what is not making the government see it,” he declared.

Abbott is not alone in opposing the project, others have said that the government should not proceed with the project as they see no real benefits for the country.
Another industry member went so far as to say that, “this project could have the same effect on the government as the ‘blue chicken’ had on the PLM Government in the early 1970’s”.

He continued, “rather than encouraging a foreign company to monopolise the poultry industry, the government should seek ways expand and further develop the poultry sector now in the hands of local farmers”.

They just want to rob us blind forever. Where are they going to get water to keep their business clean ? Besides we are just 108sq miles not enough land here for that.who raise fowl by sea side ? On October 8, 2012, Zacky Farms, LLC (the "Debtor") filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code (the "Bankruptcy Code"). The Debtor was assigned case number 12-37961 (the "Bankruptcy Case") and is pending before the Honorable Thomas Holman in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California, Sacramento Division.

GodSon your comment shows the myth in the idea that non-blacks, are not deeply involved in our elections. The truth is in many respects they control our elections by providing funding. While the silly ones are distracted by loud Guyanese and Jamaican's, exercising their democratic franchise, the very structures around us are being sold. I have no problem with persons contributing financially to political parties but its time for transparency and real rules. Let me also suggest that its time for thought to be given to direct public financing of political campaigns. The indirect costs (eg projects given out with no tender to pay for political contributions) are too high

Show me one example where the Antiguan government has promoted locall investing. All I see are the Arabs and Chinese owning te big stores and the black Antiguans owing the small village shops.

Most Antiguans don't have enough money to pay off he gov't for all the fovors thy would need.

If The Locals don't want the investment then they should invest their own money and increase chicken production. I am sure the government will grant the concessions to the ones who are willing to put up their money. Antigua people like to talk big but they do not put their money to back up the talk. I know let the government build the chicken farm then turn it over to you.

I really don't think this is a good idea at all - for all the very sensible reasons already stated by others commenting here, so I won't repeat and I hope our (civil - so called) servants are reading through these comments too so that they may be enlightened as they're obviously clueless right now...

Why a monopoly? If they con't compete with a few small local farmers then they shouldn't be in this business. Also, why 1,000 acres of land? At EC$4.00 sq/ft that is US$65 Million!

Bankrupt Company

Did everyone forget that Zacky farms is still dealing with a bankruptcy in the US? Let me refresh that Stanford left the US after his bankruptcy with his health club scams in the 80's. He upgraded from owing millions to owning billions.
I wonder where they are getting this alleged cash from that they will pay everyone? If the money is not in a bank on escrow then they should take a long walk off a short pier. :-?

Sell out for pennies today and it may cost you dollars tomorrow. They keep telling you about the $1M US. That not a lot of money for the farmers to split. Especially when you can't retire on your cut(not sure of how may would split the sum). Plus after the money is gone and this company is making millions what are the farmers going to do? What are the next generation of farmers farmers going to do. Ad you ANU what are you going to do when this company significantly raise the prise of chicken and you have to pay more?

Farmers, do not sell out. Do what's best for you and your family. IF they offer you enough to make you and your future generations not have to wrok again, then go for it. Do what's best for you. But my guess is $1M us split between a group of farmers will have you begging them for work in the near future.

I gather the governments logic is the best method to ensure greater local chicken production is to grant a monopoly. The only reason for creating a monopoly should be an item being essential (eg water). Is local chicken production really essential? Based on existing local monopolies have we learned no real lessons? Isn't it telling that Abbott whose roots have no recent history of being enslaved is against this but those who do, seem willing to engage in subservience for a piece of 1 million usd?

Two prominent farmers, one of whom asked not to be identified I hate when these guys never want to be identified for standing/speaki ng up. Are they not courageous enough? The project is bad for ANU because it will wipe out local farmers; therefore, everyone should be fighting tooth and nail to preserve what they have. They should all be outraged that the gov't sees it fit to support this FDI project and ostracize homegrown IDIs.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! It is most heartening to follow the words of One Philip Abbott Quote:
Rather than encouraging a foreign company to monopolise the Poultry Industry, the government should seek ways (to) expand and further develop the poultry sector nowin the hands of local farmers.
Add that to the PO (Provocation) which some may wish to empty in the Woods pasture but I digress.
In 1935, the Canadian Parliament established the Canadian Wheat Board as a manadatory producer marketing system for all farmers west of Ontario. This made Canada the 7th largest wheat producer. The industry has thrived & matured. As of August 1, 2012 Farmers no longer must sell direct to the Wheat Board. If GoAB wishes to improve Production & Marketing, encourage Cooperatives & Provide the Marketing arm for exports. During the 50's A&B created the Peasant Development Organization, a lose private, public, cooperative. It enjoyed a successful period but fell into disrepute due to weak administrative structures. ACLM had Coop Farms, Newton argues for Quote:
Collective fullfillment & equitable access to resources that yield sustainable prosperity.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! Quote:
Sir Vere continues his Independence Exhortation: The ultimate safeguard of Independence is Productivity. This Nation, born again tonight, must commit itself to work and to work hard. For if we fail to do so, the consequence of our failure will be dependence on a new master who will, once again, dictate our policies and direct our affairs.
We must not have struggled so long and with such fortitude to exchange one master for another.
Countrymen fast forward to today and we are encouraged by Dr. Isaac Newton to Find The Innovative Good against the Doom with Innovation and the Right People. His question to us Quote:
What's in jeopardy when we accept " The necessary evil" and reject "the innovative good" in matters of national advancement?
This mere voice has echoed Dr. Molefi Asante's what natural responses would occur in the relationships, attitudes towards the environment, kinship patterns,... if there had not been any intervention of colonialism or enslavement? What is better than operating out of our own collective interest? What resonates more than understanding that we are central to our history?

Notes From A Native Son of The Rock! Friends , Quote:
It's a fascinating area we live in ( a small place, a SIDS, Antigua, Barbuda & Redonda - a barren forlorn rock from an ancient volcano) - this Caribbean. The latest of this World's Civilization ... but we don't treat it well, we don't treat it right. It is strange that as an African People, we don't take Civilization seriously. Dorbrene E. O'Marde: Send Out You Hand
Can that be said of our Independence, Industry, Entrepreneurship, Business & Self-Respect?
CountryWomen, The Father of the Nation, on the bright new day of the Nation's Independence spoke these words. Quote:
My people, we are free this night. But freedom cannot exist without responsibility. The full burden of our freedom now rests squarely upon our shoulders. What we do with that freedom is our responsibility, we can blame no one.
Part of the responsibility of freedom is its protection. As a small developing country with little resources other than beaches, land and people, we have to safeguard our freedom by ensuring that we never become
dependent again. Continued in PT2

it’s a crazy, crazy idea

#1 skyewill » 2013-03-13 04:00

The real benefit is for the person Cibony is paying to push this Slave trade up the back sides of local people. SAY NO TO CREATING ANY MONOPOLY. I don't believe anywhere in the world would allow this. So who is getting paid. Some of the players are known to stick their heads under the table due to lack of good character. We eat chi ken everyday in ANU and we are fine. Let them compete, do a better job and earn their business like local farmers have done. This is a bad deal. We will look over our shoulders wondering if our businesses would have done well. An Antiguan government that would propose to kill local business for a foriegn one, HELL NO! These guys are here for one thing...MONEY and they could care less about you negroes!
