UPP Economic Policies Destroyed Economy - Browne

MP Gaston BrowneAntigua St John's - Reports of the Antigua & Barbuda economy recording negative growth in the first half of the year do not make surprising news to Chairman of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) Gaston Browne, who says his predictions of a slumping economy were on target for four years in a row.

Browne says the ECCB’s impromptu release of the most recent numbers that show Antigua & Barbuda as having -0.26 percent economic growth as opposed to Dominica and Grenada with almost 2 percent each is indeed yet another sign that the government has clearly lost its sense of creativity and sense of direction.

“I have predicted for the past four years that there would be decline and that the economy would not bottom out before the end of this year … and I am right on track. I am projecting that there will be a further contraction this year by about one percent, and that (economic) growth will not return to the country’s economy before 2013,” Browne said.

He noted also that the reason for the country’s continued economic contraction is not only a fault of the global economic recession but also a fault of “the bad policies of the government”, which have “deflated” and “destroyed” the economy.

The deputy opposition leader suggested that the reason Dominica and Grenada are able to record growth is through the wise utilization of their resources and the maintenance of confidence in investors by maintaining consumption demand within those countries.

“The government has failed to create any programs to stimulate the economy… Their failure to concentrate on growing the economy and instead working exclusively on the fiscal aspects has resulted in the economy literally moving from the bad to worse,” Browne said.

On Thursday Advisor to the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Sybil Welsh had informed media practitioners of the state of the economies within the ECCU.

She said the numbers were only recently compiled through the customary quantitative and qualitative system.

Finance Minister Harold Lovell has declined to comment on the matter on the grounds that the figures have not been “officially released”.

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. There was an urban phrase which now needs to be invoked. "Too Late For You!"

It is clear that the Political Elites and The "Bewildered & Bemused" Electorate are oblivious to Living In The IMF's NEST with controling Offices in the Good Hon. Dr. PM's and Hon Min of Fin. offices Fiscally Adjusting and Structurally Reforming the Nation of Antigua & Barbuda. A few moons ago, the World Bank and the EU through Reformation Exrecises trained some of GoAB's senior managers in the way they should grow up and conduct themselves.

Where were the wiseacres when we were debating the World Bank and IMF Projections for 2011 and 2012. The links to the documents by the world Bank, IMF and ECCB were posted in our comments in 2010 & 2011. There is no surprise here.

If folks would have taken the time to read the links, suggestions would have been made then which possibly could have influenced the Course of History and the Dire Predictions of the North Atlantic Bankers and Sir Dwight. No! Not Really. That's a Jest. Many would not have been surprised.

Heaven Help The Nation Of Antigua & Barbuda including Redonda.

JP Farnsworth- stop ignoring facts

#7 tenman » 2012-07-09 13:32

JP Farnsworth, I gather you did not get the memo, Browne won the case. Stop lying to defame the man. The court ruled the lands are legally his and he did nothing wrong (see www.antiguaobserver.com/?p=39771. JP how about we try to ensure that the public makes the decision via ballot when it comes to compensation for parliamentarian s? As far as the debt goes others have already replied well on how the UPP have worsened our national debt

You are joking Right!

In one stroke the government INCREASED National Debt by $47 Million dollars by illegally purchasing those old rusting Chinese generators. And when I say ILLEGALLY mean ILLEGALLY, those purchase of those generators should have gone before parliament for approval according to Antigua law.

How about the IMF loan, more debt and all this while we are now paying ABST and personal tax!

WHAT HAS THE UPP BEEN DOING WITH OUR MONEY?

Perhaps you can tell me why Leroy King Hasn't been extradited and don't spin me the UPP line of he's going through the judicial system its been over 3 years and do you see any pending court cases for King? NO Spencer and the UPP are going to make sure King never gets extradited....j ust look at who the minister of Justice is!!!

Singing for supper

@JP Farnsworth(less)

It never ceases to Amaze me how the UPP sycophants, cronies and boot-lickers, have the nerve to utter a stale and often deflective defence for all the wrong doing that is going on right NOW! People like Farnsworthless, are simply singing for their supper and cannot be taken seriously. It is unfortunate when so-called intelligent people, choose to show their lack of integrity by always defending the UPP corrupt mal-administrat ion. Mr Browne is absoulte on the target with his comments and many many true blooded Antiguans and barbudans at home and abroad TOTALLY agree with him. CALL THE ELECTIONS NOW!

You are so off target! If the UPP still trying to pay off the ALP debt, how come they have almost doubled the debt in 8 years what the ALP owed in 28? This after doubling the revenue from increased taxes?

Come on JP...not even you can believe that drivel which you so unceremoniously spout?

You really have some nerve...or are you that ignorant? By the way, Mr. Brown was cleared by the court with the land matter! How come the Chief Servant never had to answer for his land acquisitions?

Persons like you - need to take your cheese and crawl under a rock!

Brown is a funny guy

#2 JP Farnsworth » 2012-07-09 08:46

Hes right the UPP is still trying to pay off the dept he left behind. So it could be said he is correct that their policies of paying off debt dont work. Heck nobody would lend us anything before. How about that IHI deal? and that xaxd Brown hasnt returned yet? I guess he is waiting for a change in govt so he wont have to give it back. He gonna wait a long long time.
If Brown gets back in the system of not paying back will certianly clear up the debt.
