As Minister Dr Edmond Mansoor’s would know if he had read the NZStandard for radio-frequency radiation (NZS2772:1 1999), it was intended to protect only against the immediate acute heating effects of EMR and not against any long term cumulative or biological effects such as cancer. This was because the NZ standards committee- which coincidentally was comprised largely of telco and other industry representatives - did not recognise with 100% certainty any of the studies which linked EMR to long term or biological effects and because at that time (1999) they did not understand how any longer term effects were caused.

Until recently the NZ government relied on World Health Organization advice.
Last month the WHO changed its advice to recognize the biological risks from EMR. Many other states such as Italy, Switzerland, Russia and Israel have now adopted a much more precautionary approach and have reduced permissible exposures to a small fraction of those allowed in NZ. Instead of following best international practice the NZ government (and its advisors and others with vested interests) claim the world experts have got it wrong.

@piky head, get your info straight before you start misleading people. they are cell towers, not wifi, ctv etc... As an individual who has worked with such technologies for years let me give some technical information on the matter. Please note what I am not concluding whether or not cell phone signal causes cancer or not as I am not a doctor or specialist in such a field. Every wireless signal has 2 basic characteristics , frequency and wavelength. As with any form of energy, over distance it loses strength. Same goes for wireless signals. Cell Towers/Antennas are usually located in non-populated areas because of their high frequency and wavelength needed to cover the distance. This doesn't mean that they should not be located in populated areas, but the frequency and wavelength should be adjusted as recommended. As with myself and most technicians/Eng ineers I have met, we limit the amount of wireless signals that we use because we have witnessed its interference.

Its also very true that cell phones are similar to cigarettes. for years, the governments and the organizations denied that cigarettes were even potentially harmful. I remember in the movie "Thank you for Smoking" they joked about how the scientists employed by the tobacco industry could "disprove gravity". Despite the movie's comical approach, I think it is almost foreshadowing the cell phone case. i think PFKAR wants to wait until people start dying before he can conclude that it might be harmful. There is a difference between having nothing to see and not wanting to see what is there.

life it self is dangerous , when I travel via air I know there is a chance I might not complete that trip and die in an air-crash, but I still fly trusting that safety regulations are in place and enforced where air travel is concerns, why and how can it be different for this cell tower potentially dangerous even deadly radiation issue?
smoking is dangerous and deadly yet I have the right to smoke if I wish but only where I can not harm anyone else with my smoke. The pack of cigarets say's on the cover that it will kill you.
now why would i bring up the connection between smoking and cell phone towers, o yes both have been suspect of causing cancer and other illness, so far only cigarets have been proven but how long did we suspect smoking? how long are we going to wait before cell towers give us the same sad result?

first of all, the bioinitiative report was criticized only for telling one side of the story. They did not review studies which suggest no link, only those that do. which, in my opinion, doesn't change anything. The report still review over 400 legitimate scientific reports that show a possible link, and suggest that further research is needed. and stop rambling about crackpots or not crackpots. if you are willing to say that three highly educated health scientists and full of it, then please do so. but take this into account: the UK government has begun removing wifi from schools based on Dr. George Carlo's counsel and research. Dr. Olle Johansson has a Ph.D from one of the top medical universities in the world, the karolinska institute, and he has been studying non-ionizing radiation since he was in university, so about 40-50 years. And dr.Joseph Mercola wrote a very interesting article about a building where 7 people died from cancer in the years following the installation of a cell tower:

I am not asking to shut them all down i am just asking to make sure that our towers in Antigua comply with the same safety regulations the very developed countries have imposed on such.

1. The bioinitiative report is not comprised of peer reviewed research. It is an independent publication which has garnered lots of criticism from around the world for its propagandist methods. Most particularly, it has snot been able to explain why its conclusions stand in stark contrast to the vast majority of data accumulated by properly conducted, peer reviewed research.

2. I'm not clear on your claims about the evidence being "non-existent". The papers have been published and are easily retrieved through google scholar, as well as through other sources. There are crackpot dissenters in most every field who are often trying to desperately to defend their own failing research. I'm not saying that those you named are crackpots, but throwing out the names of three people and suggesting that their opinions negate the preponderance of scientific evidence is a fairly weak argument.

The recent warning acknowledges that there is no evidence establishing a link. The WHO is simply being cautious.

The problem is that caribarena seems to be implying that there *IS* correlation between cell phones and cancer. They are also calling for a government minister to justify Antigua's policy on cell towers. Given all the best information available, the minister's response should be simple:

there is no reason why the Antiguan government should believe (or should have in the past believed) that there is a health concern.

None of these studies have found any convincing correlation between exposure and adverse health effects. So, yes, I am claiming that, given the best available information, cell towers are safe. What are you using as the basis of your supposition that they are not? The author's imagination? Using the same criteria, I could claim that the cancer rate in Antigua is a function of the fact that Microwave Chef lives here. Should we get out the torches and pitchforks simply because the suggestion has been made? NO! there is no reason to believe such a claim, just as there is no reason to believe the author's claims about cell phones.

Anything's possible, but given the best available interest, keeping in mind that lots of people have looked into this, there is no reason to to believe that cell phones are any more dangerous than televisions. Where's the harm in the author employing pseudoscience to tell an interesting tale you ask? Should we really be allocating money and other resources to hunting Big Foot? There are other, well established, health risks to be addressed in Antigua. While the incompetence of a government minister comes as no surprise, it should be kept in mind that it should be kept in mind that it is impossible to draw the conclusions being made here about cell phones and the national cancer rate. There are almost an infinite number of variables affecting a nation's cancer rate and they can not all be accounted for when looking for a causative correlation. Drawing the conclusion that cell towers are responsible for the cancer rate in Antigua is about as sound as blaming it on the number of hotels on the island, which has also certainly increased regularly since 1976. The best available data shows no correlation between cell towers or cell phones and cancer.

If the current high penetration of mobile cell sites is not a disaster, then I don't know what is. Unlike most other Caribbean countries, there is practically no regulation of the telecommunicati ons sector in Antigua. No regulation of prices, no regulation of service quality, no regulation EMF..no regulation of anything. The Minister seems to think his job is simply to collect money from the operators and to cut deals. There is no one in the ministry - as far as I can tell- looking after the interest of consumers or public health concerns.

I first saw his attitude with the reporter from the daily observer Carib arena is quite in order to seek clarification from the minister it is his job and he should respond. It's really interesting that such arrogance can come from an unelected official. I see now why the pm is unable to control these guys. As I reread the blogs from the judas's attacking the messenger, I could not help but do some further research on the role of journalists. I came across a blog by Andrew Golis who is a Senior Editor for PBS’ flagship public affairs documentary series FRONTLINE. Golis stated ""their role is not just to report truth, but attack untruth." ). What I realized from that is we have a lot of "journalist" in Antigua who see themselves as simply PR readers. They are not even concerned about whether what they are saying is true. I recall speaking to a friend who works at at a major media house here and she basically pointed out to me that her job is not to report truths but to simply recite what she is told. Perhaps the reason for this is that they realize that many in the public do not appreciate hearing the truth or as another poster has suggested, their (all local media) see their job as indoctrinating persons. Again CaribArena, thanks for performing your role, particularly on this issue, and never give into those who would prefer that you sweeten or ignore untruths.

Nothing wrong with taking a stand, but don't classify it as factual news when it's an opinion filled with sensationalism, bordering on hysteria. Classify it as it is; that way you can then call a spade a spade. You speak of a "frail government". It must be your fervent hope that such an alarmist issue would topple the present government, and put back in your birdites, who would no doubt immediately rip the towers out of the ground upon their return. No hope of that before 2014. Believe it or not. Meanwhile, keep your ear close to your Crackberry.

Tenman, say no more because I could not agree with you more! It is so ironic that some of us attacked the media when it is doing its job on issues of importance! These are the same ones that hide in the bushes on matters that do not involved their party but do not have a problem coming to these ministers of government rescue, regardless, of how much they failed to do their duties in representing the people! By the way, whatever happens to that "Full-Pledge Partisan?" Tenman, the sad part is that some of them is willing to go above and beyond to protect these ministers! I am sure they don't mine giving blood to save some of these ministers life, in the event they need it! I agree with that sometimes you have to "call a spade a spade!

CaribArena, great job on this article and its predecessors. I am glad you have taken the stand you have. Too many times, major issues in Antigua are left unattended. I am glad you had the "testicular fortitude" to call the minister out for passing the buck when the responsibility lies with him. Unfortunately there are those who like the idea of protecting the frail government ministers, who in their mind should only receive the glory. The Minister can pat himself of the back when he claims that we now have added broadband capability and such but he bares no responsibility for the improper procedures or lack of any. Its the medias job to shine a light on these issues, and even when the people don't like what they are seeing, call a spade a spade.

This so-called "NEWS item" that Caribarena parades as such, is quite an opinion piece. There is one thing about reporting findings, and the minister's response or lack thereof, but such personal directives as, ""Minister Mansoor, as the minister of Information Technology, it is your job and responsibility to address the nation" cannot pass as being objective, but rather as a sensational editorial or letter to the editor. This lack of professionalism will cost your future credibility as a news house. The issue is serious and needs to be addressed nationally, not only by government but by consumers. Given yesterday's WHO disclosure, it appears the towers are not only of concern, but the very phones we put to our heads in many cases perpetually. Easy to dump on government (a national pastime), but what are WE prepared to do about it?

The transmitter you hold next to your ear all day long talking with your girlfriend or boy friend is your OWN problem! Stop blamming someone else for your own faults. There would not be any cell phone towers if there were NO CELL PHONES! So stop winning!

Its funny, you tell people about adhering to standards and they tell you the world will come to an end. You would think the idea of there being a fair and safe process would appeal to persons but instead they advocate that the wild wild west mentality continue. In other countries where there are standards, the cell phone companies are still able to provide their service and some persons would tell you that the signals there are even better. In fact in some of those countries they have 4G networks while we are still basically on 2G. Perhaps the answers lie in our liking things messy and disorganized. Like the abused woman who makes excuses for her abuser, we too are quick to make excuses for our government and cell phone companies. I guess the argument is though we may lose our lives to cancer because of their actions, we are still so lucky to have them here.

According to the article, people started protesting when there were 400 towers on all of trinidad. Some simple math will show you that 400 towers for all of trinidad is 1 tower for every 4.9 square miles. In antigua, we got one tower for every 1.1 square miles!

Caribarena, you can only do so much to bring this awareness to the m**. It is up to the powers-to-be to address the potential health risks involved in these towers and take the necessary actions to avoid an increase in cancer cases. This is an outrage and I just can't see why it is on the back burner of all issues! All media outlets in Antigua should be putting pressure on the Ministry (where is the love of country?) You guys make me sick to my stomach! Are you telling me that the great Dr. Mongoose can't address this issue fully to the nation? How long would he evade the questions? Or would we have to set a big mongoose trap for him, and bring him to the nation? Enough said!

I wonder if anyone realises the reason all these antennas are up is to support our lifestyles. Every jack, jill and their mother want a Blackberry nowadays. How do you think the network supports all of these communication devices? If we take down antennas watch people protest about "high-prices" and "poor-service". It is like when people decried the oil spill last year, yet still want to have everything wrapped in plastic, a house full of electronics, and a personal vehicle. These are the costs of our modern lifestyles. So either we make the sacrifice and change the way we live or just bex and dead.

An international panel of experts says cellphones are possibly carcinogenic to humans after reviewing details from dozens of published studies.

The statement was issued in Lyon, France, on Tuesday by the International Agency for Research on Cancer after a week-long meeting of experts. They reviewed possible links between cancer and the type of electromagnetic radiation found in cellphones, microwaves and radar.

The agency is the cancer arm of the World Health Organization and the **sment now goes to WHO and national health agencies for possible guidance on cellphone use.

Give the cell phone carries an option.....FIX IT OR LOOSE BUSNIESS. Simple as that. If we are so hell bent on this issue and we are made to feel like we have no cause for cocncern, show them.

I am not surprised at all at the non-communicati on from Dr. Mansoor or LIME. (scratching backs syndrome). They are both aware of the seriousness of this issue and do not or cannot come up with some cock and bull story to feed the intellectuals of this nation.
