Specific events and celebrations remind us of the need to broaden our knowledge of certain topics. In February many take the opportunity to delve a little deeper into Black History. For some they want to explore the ordeal of slavery. For others they want to know more about the day to day activities of the people, the mothers, the fathers, the children who were owned by other human beings. Some years the interest shifts towards the fight for freedom, including rebellions and the lives of those who chose to run. Black history is however not confined to those 400 plus years when black Africans were forcibly taken from their homeland to a new world. The history of Black People goes as far back as the beginning of time and must be seen to include many of the great discoveries and inventions of modern time and the great wars and destruction of modern time.
So what will you focus on this year as you celebrate Black History Month?
Each week we will introduce you to two possible reads that may broaden your mind. One will be of interest to you and the other may be more suitable for the young person in your life.
