Acting and Performance Workshops Ahead

Judd-BatchelorAntigua St John's - If you ever had the dream of becoming a movie star, acting on Broadway, or even in a commercial, this is your chance to see if you have what it takes.

Antigua Rhythms Cultural and Performing Arts Center (ARCPAC) is hosting an international acting and performance workshop from February 4 to 21.

There are two age groups: 11-18 years ($50 for the entire workshop or $10 per class) and 18 and up ($70 for entire workshop or $15 per class). The venue will be the ARCPAC on Sir George Walter Highway (behind Romeo’s Plumbing).

The multi-talented London based Judd Batchelor will host the sessions. She said coming to  Antigua has been one of her dreams since her father, the late David Batchelor, was born here. “I have trained many young and mature actors, and seen many of them go on to work in major TV, stage, film, and commercials," she said. "Now my aim is to come here to develop Antigua’s talent. It’s time for Antiguans to shine on the world stage!”

Batchelor trained as an actress at the Mountview Theatre School in London and the Gene Frankel Theater Workshop in New York, and went on to work in theatre, film, commercials and radio.

In 2009, she was the lead actress in a film called Sweet Mother, which went on to win the prestigious Edinburgh International Film Festival. Batchelor is also a published playwright, and one of her plays, A Mother Speaks, was performed at the Hackney Empire in London and then toured England.

“We received very favourable reviews and I am now in the process of developing it into a film,” said Batchelor, who will use excerpts of this play in the workshops.

“I'm really looking forward to working with Colin and his talented team. My aim is simple: to sharpen existing talent in Antigua and put them on par with the international acting/performance scene. Classes will include: improvisation, script work, audition technique, and the business."

Colin Charles, director of the ARCPAC, noted that Batchelor is a highly-sought-after acting coach in London, and has trained a lot of young talent that has now gone on to star in major films, theatre and TV shows like Hollyoaks, Law & Order UK, and ad campaigns for food giants McDonalds. Batchelor has also been a private coach for actors such as Phillip Browne, who has starred in numerous musicals like the Lion King and Carmen Jones.

The ARCPAC has been in existence for 15 years, with its primary focus being cultural activities, dance, fitness, and the support of performing arts. The group holds its own events and workshops, as well as hosting other people’s ideas.
