Kiwanis Celebrates 97 Years

Kiwanis Club's BoardAntigua St John's - Kiwanis Clubs in Antigua will join colleagues around the world in observing the 97th anniversary of Kiwanis International on January 21.

This milestone will be celebrated in Antigua with the gathering of clubs in Division 27 of the Eastern Canada & Caribbean District, for a Divisional Council meeting over the weekend.

Kiwanians are expected from the Eastern Caribbean and Martinique for the weekend gathering. Kiwanis is a worldwide service organisation of men and women who share the challenge of community and world improvement.

Kiwanis has grown to more than 8,400 clubs in 96 nations. There are about 606,608 active members in the Kiwanis family, representing nearly every culture on every continent, all seeking to improve people’s lives.

The Kiwanis Club of St John’s Antigua and the Kiwanis Club of Wadadli are associate members of the Kiwanis International, whose motto is “Serving the Children of the World”.

A unique characteristic of the Kiwanis Club is that it includes organisations for people of all ages. The Kiwanis-sponsored clubs locally are K-Kids at the elementary level, Builders Clubs at the middle school level, Key Clubs at the high school level, and Circle K Clubs at the college level. These provide an opportunity for people to become personally involved in their communities, and to build a positive future for themselves.

Kiwanis has accomplished many programmes and projects to help those in need. One major continuing programme is the Young Children: Priority One programme. This addresses children's needs through projects in pediatric trauma, safety, child care, early development, infant health, nutrition, and parenting skills.

Kiwanis and UNICEF was engaged in their first Worldwide Service Project to virtually eliminate iodine deficiency disorders, which can cause various degrees of mental and physical impairment in the fetus and in young children.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have again joined forces in the Eliminate Project to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, a global project estimated to cost US$110 M.

Kiwanis International is dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The Kiwanis Club of St John’s meets every Thursday at the Heritage Hotel at 8 pm, while the Kiwanis Club of Wadadli meets the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Heritage Hotel at 7 pm.
