The competition, launched in May, included two aspects - a garden competition, and a poetry and research segment.

The garden competition had three categories flower garden, fruits and vegetables, and landscape.

In the flower garden segment, the first place winners from the four zones were Esther Josiah, Francella Henry, Eunice Andrew and Candace Parker.

For the fruit and vegetable garden, the top positions went to Rodrick Nicholas, Geraldine Bonnie, Morvette George, and Foster Thomas.

In the landscaping section, Kenroy Smith and Francella Henry walked away with the top individual prizes, while Sea Breeze topped the Groups and Organisations.

In the poetry and research segment, the winners were Terry Benjamin Jr, Terikiah Benjamin, and Nitchelle Strawn.

For Barbuda, the top winners in the various categories were Cynthia Desuza, Eugenie Desuza, and Ivor Webber. Overall, the three winners were Esther Josiah, Francella Henry, and Eugene Desuza.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Transformation Edson Joseph, who spoke on behalf of Minister Wilmoth Daniel, said participation is vital for the success of the Homes Families and Gardens Festival and for economic development.

Noting the great need for resources each year, Chairperson of the organizing committee Dale O’Brien was grateful to the various businesses that offered financial assistance this year. The Antigua and Barbuda Development Bank, which sponsored all the first place winners, intends to play an integral part each year.

A community festival on Saturday at the Pigotts playing field, featuring live entertainment and an array of local foods, will close out the 2011 Homes, Families and Gardens Festival, under the theme “Think beautification for the nation’s health and wealth." The event begins at 1pm.

What about commercial properties?

I think we're onto a good thing with the beautification of the island. Tourists want to come to a place where they are surrounded by beauty, and where the residents seem to care about their homeland.

Dilapidated cars abandoned on the side of the road, a sea of empty roadside billboards, and houses that have not seen a coat of paint since the PLM days, do nothing to tell tourists that we're glad they came, and want them to come back.

Now we need to do the same with our business properties. Stores need to clean up their act, gas stations need to paint and do some gardening, and clothing stores need to take courses in merchandising. Let's start looking at rewarding the island's business people who make an effort to 'up their game', in terms of landscaping, merchandising and customer service.
