Sandals Ambassador Snags another Emmy

Antigua St John's - Sandals Resorts' international culinary ambassador, Chef Walter Staib, received a third Emmy Award for his television cooking show, A Taste of History® during the prestigious 29th Annual Emmy® Awards held in Philadelphia, USA.

The second season of the show won Best Historic/Cultural Program or Special.  In its first season, Emmy® Awards went to Chef Staib and James Davey for “On-Camera Talent Program Host/Moderator” and director, respectively. 

A Taste of History® brings America’s culinary history to life as Staib travels to historically significant locations to capture the essence of 18th century cuisine. He has been honoured to cook across the globe in historical locations.

Staib brought his passion for history and Caribbean cooking together for seasons two and three of A Taste of History®, filming in Jamaica, St Lucia, Antigua, and The Bahamas to share the story of the influence that the West Indies had on colonial culture and dining.

He recently featured historic sites such as Betty’s Hope, Nelson’s Dockyard, and Shirley’s Heights, thanks to the assistance of Antigua & Barbuda’s world renowned anthropologist, Dr Reginald Murphy. The show has also cooked in many American landmarks, and gone to Mount Vernon to cook in George Washington’s kitchen, Monticello to cook in Jefferson’s home, to Montpelier to re-enact an outdoor party with James and Dolley Madison... and more.

A Taste of History is now in filming on season four, and continues to trek across the globe in search of the origin of favourite foods and their roots from Malaysia, where Catchup originated, to Guyana, on location of El Dorado Rum Distillery, which provided rum to the British Navy in the 18th century as well as in historical locations in America. 

Chef Walter’s passion for culinary excellence has earned him numerous international accolades, including the prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole de la République Française, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and being named First Culinary Ambassador to the City of Philadelphia.  

Chef Staib’s love affair with Caribbean cuisine began in the 1970’s as he completed major food and beverage projects on the French side of St Martin, and in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Studying intensely under Jamaican cooks in jerk huts, food stalls at Faith’s Pen, in the Blue Mountains, as well as in local markets, fruit and spice orchards, molasses, rum and coffee plantations, Staib became a veritable authority on Jamaican delicacies and dishes.

Through his company, Concepts By Staib Ltd, Staib was one of the founders of the Caribbean Culinary Federation, and organised the first Caribbean culinary competition between 15 countries in the Caribbean. He was also the first inductee into the Caribbean Culinary Hall of Fame for his efforts to promote Caribbean cuisine outside the Caribbean.
