Cassava growers have been told to expect a major boost in sales this year. Caudley George of Heritage Food recently returned from the United Kingdom, where a number of wholesalers and supermarkets specializing in Caribbean food expressed interest in regular supplies of cassava bread, known locally as bamboola and bammy.
Other Caribbean islands have their own name for this product.
In addition to the cassava bread, samples of Antigua & Barbuda yam, sweet potato, scotch bonnet hot pepper, and the ever-popular local seasoning pepper were accepted with great interest. Quite naturally, the question of frequency and availability was brought up, and the interested parties were assured of regular supplies.
Pleased with his successful visit and the possibility of increased production with export potential, George said local farmers will be given the chance to participate in this initiative as part of the government's import substitution policy where nationals are encouraged to grow more and eat more of what is grown.
Antigua & Barbuda is in its 30th year of independence, and as part of the celebrations, activities including full-scale food promotion have been planned. This is expected to significantly increase agriculture's contribution to the economy.
