ABHTI Team Wins First Annual BBQ Challenge

The winning team
Antigua St John's - It was almost a clean sweep for Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute’s (ABHTI’s) Soul Food BBQ team at Sunday’s Smokin’ Hot Barbecue competition, and as a result, the group will be representing the country at 5th annual Cattlemen’s Caribbean BBQ Competition in Puerto Rico later this year.

Soul Food BBQ was one of four teams entered by ABHTI for the inaugural grill-off styled event on the institute’s grounds, but the other ABHTI teams emerged champions in categories like Showmanship, which dealt with presentation, hygiene and public interaction.

Other teams competing in the inaugural event were Hermitage Bay, Navy Seals, Smokin’ Grillers, Rambo First Blood, Grill Master, East Side Grillers, Culinary Smokers, SJC Elite, Grill Hogs, Hawksbill Resort, Susie’s Hot Sauce, Jumby Bay, Darkwood Possie, Ocean Potions, Cliff on the Grill, and team Orande.

The competition was held from 11 am to 6 pm with teams competing in a slow smoke grilling affair with Pork Shoulders, Ribs, Chicken, Steaks and Briskets.

Hot dogs and burgers were added to the menu that was available at no extra charge to patrons who sampled the finished products.

The event, which was held in Antigua for the first time, was aimed at creating a more level playing field for individuals and teams vying for the regional cooking competition.

First Annual BBQ Challenge

Antigua & Barbuda was represented on at least two occasions and its teams placed third and seventh out of more than a score of challengers.

Sponsors included Hutchinson’s, Island Provision, Karib Cable, A.S Bryden & Sons, Chef World and Susie’s Hot Sauce, among others.

The organizers will now head to Jamaica and the Bahamas to select other winners to compete in the Puerto Rico Challenge.

The champion team from that event will then represent the region in the USA for a series of international competitions with some 200 participants.

Did she also tell you that TTHTI tuition is paid for by the Government? So even if the students in Trinidad pay fees it does not come up to what the students up here pay.

Clear correction. The Trini lecturer NEVER spoke about students being exploited. She did however note that other institutions have numerous charges for everything such as late fees, grade query fees, student council fees, per semester registration fees, locker fees and that students should be thankful that they did not have all those fees and charges to pay at ABHTI

this is a case of another function taking priority over the students' academics. However it will remain unreported because Antigua people love dem belly. School was cancelled the day after the event because of the dirt state the compound was left in. Students were ambushed to come to school to clean up the mess in their uniforms and without gloves. I guess this is not important because as one blogger put it "Just congratulate the winners and organisers for making an effort to improve the socioeconomics of our little island, and stop with the conspiracy theories."

are we to believe that a team of students at the Hospitality Training Institute made up of members who are not Culinary students for the most part beat teams from Jumby Bay, Hermitage and other established hotels with top chefs? If this is so then the management at ABHTI deserve OBE's, MBE's and Knighthoods from Queen Elizabeth 2.

Greetings folks, I would most definitely congratulate the organizers of this event and of course the winners. This is a great opportunity to promote our culinary skills. We grow some of the hottest peppers and excellent spices in our Nation. These are two micro industries which can help to employ several dozens even hundreds of individuals and investment opportunities.
There are many such cook-offs across the north american continent. Suzie's Hot Sauce was a winner in many of the Southern United States as a hot-firey-peppe r-sauce, and according to King Swallow, "de man wid de pepper-sauce is boss..." stay strong in One Love

#4 on the scene » 2012-06-04 12:40

while the cooking, eating and partying has subsided, students today were greeted by a dirty compound with paper cups and plates and other garbage from yesterday's event littering the compound. The management of the school and organizers of the event did not hire a clean up crew but instead are once again using the students' free labour to clean up the compound. This although they charged a $50 entrance fee and had corporate sponsorship/ It is really true that in Antigua the way to a person's brain is their stomach
