Antigua St John's - The Citizens Welfare Division is working to build social and economic support for community-based services to help foster parents.
There are 63 children and 47 foster parents registered in the foster care system in Antigua and Barbuda, in a programme of temporary care for children by substitute parents.
Under the theme “Fostering Relationships," the Citizens Welfare Division recently completed the celebration of foster care month in May with a picnic for foster parents and children and the division is looking at the theme on a broader spectrum to further involve the community to offer support to foster parents and children.
According to Senior Welfare Officer Farida Isaac-Carr, the picnic was an opportunity to further build a relationship with foster parents on the island. Two individuals were also recognised. They are 2011 CIBC Unsung Hero Sylvaneta Brooks, who has fostered children for over 25 years, and Alison Warner, who has been a foster parent for 30 years.
Isaac-Carr said the Citizens Welfare Division was overwhelmed at the support received from businesses and members of the community throughout the month and wanted to express its gratitude.
Among those assisting were Coco's Hotel and Restaurant, Carlisle Bay Hotel, Curtain Bluff Hotel, Hawksbill Hotel, Turner's Beach Restaurant and Bar, Denis Bar and Restaurant, Hallpike Catering, Chef 2 U Catering, Philton's Bakery, The Inn Hotel, Subway, Island Cooler, Kennedy's Club Ltd, Premiere Beverages, Quinn Farara, Anjo's Wholesale, Billy's Supermarket, Gloria's Beauty Salon, LMR Advertising, Big Banana, Ayoushe, Flo's Perfume, Lipstick, Le Bristro, the Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force, ABS Television, Charlesworth Grant, Pauline Charles, Jim Joseph and Mrs. Slyvaneta Brooks.
