A Mentally Healthy Workplace is a Positive Workplace

Riccardo Cuppini/FlickrAntigua St John's - As we celebrate Labour Day this year in Antigua and Barbuda, it is important to remember that a Mentally Healthy Workplace is one of the standards that every employer and employee should strive to attain, says the Superintendant of Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital, Mr. Clarence E. Pilgrim.

Mr. Pilgrim says that management and labour unions have a responsibility to employees; to work in harmony and ensure that the many components to creating and fostering a mentally healthy workplace are identified and where appropriate, implemented within a calculated time-frame.

Mr. Pilgrim further says that he would like to see the creation of a “Partnership for Workplace Mental Health Standards”, which would be a group of dedicated professionals made up primarily of Employees, Unions, Health Care Providers and other interested stakeholders, who will work to develop a workplace Mental Wellness Plan.

Pilgrim says that Mental Health is not just about diagnosed illnesses. It can also be about many factors that improve a person’s well being.

Nutrition, fitness, and even good sleep habits are examples of what can play a key role in mental health and overall happiness. The perception is that one’s mental Wellness is an issue that is often overlooked by employers and Unions, but it is a very real concern, as a growing number of employees and managers find themselves overwhelmed by the pressures of their jobs, families and finances in today’s economy.

Mr. Pilgrim further strongly suggests that employers and unions should not sit back and wait for problems to go to them.

He said, “We should begin from now to consider all the things that make a workplace what it is, examine the practises and expectations of all concerned, and see what can be done to create an environment that is shaped by the implementation of a Mental Wellness Plan!”

Good news! There will be a National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace published this Fall. It will help highlight the very things that employers, workers and worker representatives can do to contribute to a better working environment. You will be able to access the Standard at www.csa.ca in Fall, 2012.
