Businessman Helps Barbudan Child

Shawana on the plane to BarbadosAntigua St John's - Just three days after Stanhope Shepherd, in conjunction with JHR Caribbean, raised over US$20,000 at its successful charity auction in Antigua, Shawana Beazer is in Barbados receiving her life-changing surgery.

Adam Barrett, CEO of Stanhope Shepherd, met Shawana for the first time three weeks ago at the company's kite spectacular at the Pink Sands beach bar in Barbuda. He promised to help this five year old, and pulled out all the stops to create a miracle.

This week, little Shawana and her mother were on the company's plane en route to Barbados.

Barrett said he has a simple philosophy in life - "know where you are going, know how to get there, and then get there in the quickest possible time".

Arthur Nibbs, on this week's Fire and Steel, congratulated Barrett for delivering on his promises, in spite of hold-ups with his company's development on the island.

Stanhope Shepherd intends to develop a marina, golf course, hotel, and residential development on a small corner of Barbuda.

The project received unanimous support during a meeting in Barbuda late last year, but is now awaiting final government approval in Antigua.

Hurray for Shawana !!!!!!

#9 Eyes Open » 2012-03-31 14:39

Great news for the child.
But wait! What does this have to do with that real estate scheme?
Lets see: US$20,000.00 now. US$3.4 B (Billion) in real estate value to speculate with for the next 200 years!
Quote JHR guy: "know where you are going, know how to get there, and then get there in the quickest possible time".

Get It!!

There are two stories mixed up here - Shawana Beazer being helped by a very successful fund raising exercise, and Stanhope Shepherd's proposed development in Barbuda.

The first story is really great news, and reflects very well on Adam and Derek Barrett in organising the fund raising so successfully.

However, as verna says above, a good news story about a successful fund raising excercise and Shawana's good fortune almost appears to have been hijacked as a PR exercise for Stanhope Shepherd.

Everyone wishes Shawana all the best for her medical treatment, and are grateful to the Barretts for organising this so successfully - but that should have no bearing whatever on whether it is appropriate that their proposed development in the name of Stanhope Shepherd Ltd receives the go ahead.

Great PR for a company trying to develop one of the most controversial developments Barbuda has seen.
Great for the little girl too.

This was reported a couple of weeks ago but here's the information.

Shawana is 5 and has Cerebral Palsy, this was a condition from birth as she was the product of a 34 week pregnancy , concluded by a spontaneous vertex delivery complicated bt third stage hypoxia with consequent cerebral palsy.

Shawana has spastic diplegia with a popliteal angle of 20 per cent bilaterally and a 35 per cent equine us of both ankles meaning that she has never walked

I hope this is enough information for you?

This is a human story, it confirms the struggle that families have in this region dealing with medical problems, it's not about the detail and more about what can be done

I am so happy for this child and thank Mr. Barrett for leading the way and getting this done in 3 weeks. I heard the mother being interviewed on 104.3 Nice FM and she said she has walked the length and breadth of Antigua and Barbuda for 5 long years and could get no help. Dennis Seon and Nice Fm did an outstanding job and must be complimented. It seems that almost all day for a few weeks, we kept hearing about this appeal. God will bless you.

Is this story about the little girl or just about Barrett? This tory has little mention about the child, what is her illness? This seem like one of those "praise the giver" stories.

What is Shawana's last name? What illness does she have? This is not a very well written article. A good journalist answers "Who, what, where, when, why"
