Heat Woes Affecting Hospital

Heat Woes Affecting HospitalAntigua St John's - Patients, staff, and visitors at the Mount St John's Medical Centre (MSJMC) have been simmering for several weeks since the air conditioning (AC) unit there has been, for the most part, non-functional.

A senior staff member at the facility, who requested anonymity, said the problem reportedly stems from non-functioning compressors, and which has led to the purchase of two new units at a cost of over US$50,000.

The source added that the system had been giving trouble for some time before this. “I think if it was dealt with in due time, probably it would not need the replacement of both compressors," he said. "But now it’s another two-week wait, and what will happen in the meantime - nobody knows."

The source said relatives have been bringing standing fans for patients to alleviate some of their distress.

While it is envisaged that the system will be back up within the next two weeks, many nurses and patients are disgruntled at the discomfort. One triage nurse told Caribarena.com that the situation, coupled with scorching daily temperatures, has provoked her asthma attack, and she has had to use the nebulizer in the Casualty department to relieve her symptoms.

The distress has been expressed via social media, with one person who said she had been visiting someone at the hospital writing, “Well well our state of the art hospital A/C broke down the whole hospital hot, not even 1 part but de whole hospital. 1 big long dutty chupse”

Attempts to reach Head of Marketing and Communications Salma Crump, were unsuccessful.

After all those nice drug dealers and corrupt South, Central and Caribbean politicians spent so much money (through SIBL) to build Antigua a nice hospital, you can't even keep the A/C running??

No wonder the Chinese are sending fourth rate workers to a second rate, third world country!

Fine Buildings Do Not Make World Class Hospitals PT2

Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock. Let us get away from what seems to be developing as our national lament of blaming the foreigners amongst us. Here is a different approach which the Blues may wish to ponder, it is not too late. We should not permit this excellent facility to approach the level of FM as at the Airport: Read this brief article. http://www.expresshealthcaremgmt.com/20020715/focus1.shtml
Maybe the Good UN Ambassador could bring his scholarship to this dilemma, but I forgot that he has never practiced in this area of his training for which the People Of Antigua Paid Dearly. Hopefully by reading this simple but detailed article, many will understand the complexities and seriously ask if our Human Capital is available, ready and has been properly positioned to deliver the necessary and recquisite due dilligence, care, fiscal and fiduciary responsibility to the Tax Payers.
We need to Plan Strategically, develop the organization structure with the modern processes and sytems managed and operated with people with the skills. No Political Cronies. Heaven Help The Nation of Antigua & Barbuda - Redonda?

Fine Buildings Do Not Make World Class Hospitals PT1

Notes From A Native Son of the Rock. That we have one of the Best Hospital Facilities in the Eastern Caribbean is not to be gainsaid. My first visit to this facility confirmed the subject thesis. To scapegoat the oriental builders is so huge an error that is exposes our lack of understanding of not only Facilities Management (FM)in Health Care Facilities, but also modern commercial, institution and public facilities. Whether the powers that be had chosen the "Right Builders" is immaterial today - this is what we have NOW. It is ours, we must optimize protection and longevity of the assets rather than doing what we do best - blaming everyone else, non-nationals for our poor performance. Politicians like to cut ribbons...but?

#7 Buzzbomb » 2011-06-17 15:04

The multi-purpose cultural centre lead the way in high maintenance costs and unsustainabilit y. Now we have the huge burden of maintaining a rapidly deteriorating white elephant out near Parham.
Oh, I just can't wait till we get to the streetlights.
Politicians like to cut ribbons and get press releases, but what if it's all Chinese Junk?
Pun intended.

There is the salary for at least 3 Antiguans down the drain. and they say no money is there to fix our economy. Anyone with any common sence can see that is is not the golbal economy that Antiguans. Antigua Suffer from dumb moves like not getting a Trane or a commercial White Westinghouse or better a GE. Would have been under warranty. We will buy another piece of poop and it too will cost more next time and will never learn anything. The Chinese have never built anything durable.

simmering for several weekS. DID YOU SAY WEEKS? In a hospital?
I think if it was dealt with in due time, probably it would not need the replacement of both compressors,"
"But now it’s another two-week wait, and what will happen in the meantime - nobody knows." I DO. Your donkey will be sweating and patients may even die. Why? Cause you bought a ten dollar AC unit and Paid $100 for it. Don't worry Everyone in Antigua does the same thing. DUTY, LEVY, ABST, CST and don't forget the cost of the item and the fact you may have paid tax on it when you perchased it overseas, SHIPPING, and when the 99cents toothbrush reach Antigua, Please pay for the WARRANTS, AND THE SHIPPING AGENT, I am not done yet! PLEASE PAY THE BROKER and transportation and It will take you 100 years to get it out of CUSTOMS. TOTAL COST FOR YOUR TOOTH BRUSH you paid 99cents for?? $1,000,000 ec. The report in the other newspaper is that MSJMC has to spend over 50,000 dollars to replace the compressors. Now anyone that knows anything about commercial air conditioners knows that a 5 year warranty is standard on all sealed parts such as the compressor. Maybe Salma Crump is the wrong person for this job because it makes no sense that the hospital should have to spend 50,000 dollars for repairs so soon.
