Hospital Fires Outspoken Doctor

Hospital-Fires-Outspoken-Doctor‪Antigua St John's - The young physician who recently voiced his disapproval with the treatment of staff at the Mount St John's Medical Centre (MSJMC) has been fired.‬

Unconfirmed reports reaching this website suggested that five doctors have resigned from MSJMC within the last 24 hours, with indications suggesting more could follow.

Caribarena.com was told that the junior physician was fired on Monday, with immediate effect. This came two weeks after Dr Powell went public with his many grouses about the hospital's sleep-in policy and other concerns.

According to sources, MSJMC's management explained in the dismissal letter, signed by Medical Director Dr Dane Abbott and CEO Dr Victor Jackson, that the institution would no longer tolerate Dr Powell’s refusal to adhere to the sleep-in requirements when working extended overnight shifts. His committal privileges at the institution were revoked.

MSJMC Head of Marketing & Communications Salma Crump has not responded to requests for clarification on the matter.

According to reliable information reaching Caribarena.com, the doctor is considering his legal options. With that, sources have said the junior doctor has not been eager to speak on the matter.

Firing Doctors is not the answer to your mess up there. Get the needed chemicals to do the tests when poor people visit the Hospital. They have to leave not knowing where to find the money to go private.

Liberty or death?

#10 nameless » 2012-02-01 12:25

If this is democracy heaven help us! If Dr Powell was the only one "making trouble" it would be of concern!
However there are five other Doctors who drop their bread and **er to stand behind Dr Powell, that speaks volume.
In a time with all these negatives coming out of this hell hole, maybe just maybe the administrative body should have found a way to resolve this.
Keeping in mind it concerns the welfare of the people of this nation...POOR PEOPLE......
Heaven for-bid if more of the staff resign today! What kind of Dr's do they now have filling in for those who have walked off? (well
I hope they didnt leave those areas without dr's!!!!)
Those days of been afraid of goverment is fast leaving the mind of people! Wake up!!
We no longer have to wait onto the goverment own radio station to expose whatever ails us and we no longer AFRAID!
KILL ONE TODAY ANOTHER ONE WILL RISE UP AND THEY WILL RISE WITH A VENGENCE THAT WILL SHAKE THE WORLD.........K EEP THAT IN MIND!!!

The fear factor #3

#9 Fear Not I Am God » 2012-02-01 12:06

The churches in this country are presently on non-active and don’t see the need of the nation. But this is just another example of someone brave enough to speak out and speak up, targeted and none of his co-workers that will stand with him. When the Liat captain was sacked at least we had a reaction from his colleagues. While we sit and allow these things to happen one day we will wonder where is everyone to stand-up with me. Remember Ms. Hill warned us about this when her father got sacked. God help us to overcome the spirit of fear in this country.

Fear Not I Am God

The fear factor #2

#8 Fear Not I Am God » 2012-02-01 12:04

The Bible speaks a lot of this spirit of fear and we saw this spirit first in Adam after he knew he had sin against God. Each time God appeared to the profits the first thing he said to them was “Fear Not, For I am the Lord Thy God”. We also read further in the scripture that God has not given us a spirit of fear. So why do men fear so much in life. Fear of being killed, Fear of being laugh at, Stage fear, fear of failure. In the past parents use to raise their children with fear. A child was not be heard. When people drive fear in to others they should always remember the rule of the universe, what goes around comes around one day. Saddan Housein, Gahdaffy and other dictators can all attest to that. One day you will too. And for Christ sake sure you have children.

#7 Fear Not I Am God » 2012-02-01 12:04

It is sad to see that the spirit of fear has captured Antigua and Barbuda now for some time. People are afraid to speak up because of fear of victimization. And this fear is real as we can see in the actions towards this good gentleman. From one day to another you can be put on the breadline or your family targeted and victimize. It started in the political directorate when they took office to replace all they considered where from the other party. We remember the sacking of the APUA General Manager, The sacking of the entire top of the police force and many others in different places. Antiguans and Barbudans are an almost ancestral related society. And what happened here effect many families directly, Yet the majority of the people seeing all this happen, sits idly by and watch and think as long as it doesn’t happen to me it’s OK. We have therefore allowed the spirit of fear to rule over our country. Believe me this very same spirit was in Nazi Germany and many other places where people ruled with fear for many years.

This why things will never change in Antigua and Barbuda. Just as proud Antiguan said "you must be able to accept criticism" Many of these big shots go after the messenger instead of listening to the message. Then again maybe they know what the message is already and don't care to change it.

in all state institutions

#5 in the know » 2012-02-01 11:11

This is the norm in all state institutions be it State Insurance, Social Security and even the hotel school. This doctor got fired but at the hotel school an entire school found that a 50% pass mark was changed to 65% overnight which totally disrupted their GPA. This was done because they came to this media house for assistance. In this country when you stand up for your rights, you get victimized.

MSJMC Fires Outspoken Doctor

#4 Proud ANU Queen » 2012-02-01 10:09

I must admit that I did not hear the Dr.'s interview on the "Big Issues," so I am not at liberty to comment on that aspect of this saga. However, after reading a previous article and now this one, it begs to wonder: what ever happened to constructive criticism? I thought that it makes for healthy debate that would subsequently bring about change. Was this young physician being insubordinate or was he just expressing his views based on his experience? There is often talk of freedom of speech; however, from my observations, this premise is reserved only for a priveleged few, and in some instances, when it's convenient for the opposing party.

Considering the reported conditions at MSJMC, is it wise to terminate physicians and have fellow physicians resign in a show of support? Can the remaining staff provide quality care to the sick?

After listening Dr Powell on the Big Issues, i knew this was coming.
Mr Powell i know you are a doctor who went through eight years of medical nightmare, but in every establishment there are rules which one have to follow regardless of the PHD infront your name. If the rules put forward was not of your liking you should have just quit instead of having a dismissal on your record.
You are an inteligent guy so this shouldn't be that bad life goes on, I must say that am happy to hear some of your fellow doctors resign, good support.
Good luck to all of you, as doctors the sky is the limit.

MSJMC hog wash 2

#1 Dijon. » 2012-02-01 04:15

Like I blogged earlier, Caribarena has not presented the full story.
The doctor had quite a number of concerns that went way beyond sleeping in when on call.
MSJMC choose to focus on that one point as it is easier to sell. But like Bob Marley said, half the story has never been told. Well in this case not reported on Caribarena.
Is it just because of not wanting to sleep in why a steady stream of good young doctors have left or pushed out from MSJMC over the past few years?
Is it just because of the sleep in issue that 5 other doctors apparently have resigned in the past 24 hours.
It is so funny that when I returned to Antigua there were so many doctors who wanted to fight my battle. I was told how the then Medical Superintendent at Holberton was just an ALP stooge who did not want young Antiguan doctors to work in the hospital.
Now these same doctors, what have they done since the government has changed and they are now in control ?
Did we kill Caesar only to get Nero?
