A measles outbreak in South Africa at the FIFA World Cup 2010 has prompted the Ministry of Health to advise residents to ensure their vaccinations are up-to-date.
Close to 16,000 cases have been reported so far, and there is concern that this could spread outwards to other countries with the natural movement of travellers.
"All health care workers in the public and private sectors must be on the alert to the possibility of measles and rubella importations," the ministry said.
All persons, especially those travelling abroad, were advised to have their measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunisation status updated.
The public was encouraged to take health care or immunisation records to the nearest health centre for an update.
