Top Nurse for 2010 Named

Ashline-Francis-SamuelA nurse in the Radiology Department at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre has been named “My Favourite Nurse” of 2010. Ashline Francis-Samuel, who is also a midwife by training, will receive her award on May 12 at the annual MSJMC Nurses Day Luncheon.

The award, the first of its kind by the hospital, recognizes the nurse who has received the most votes from members of the community for being outstanding in patient care. Francis will receive the grand prize of a trip to Puerto Rico, a photo shoot from Photogenesis Glamour Shots, a commemorative plaque, and other prizes. The other finalists include Nurse McBerth Arthur, Nurse Gracelyn John-Barton, and Nurse Mininisa Hinds, all nurses within the MSJMC Emergency Department.

“I remember saying to Ms Crump that even if I don’t win this, just being a part of it means so much to me," Francis said. "The reaction I’m getting from the patients who were telling me that they are going to vote for me was just heart-warming. They have never said some of these things to me before. This is a good thing… I like the feeling.”

“We couldn’t have done this at a better time,” said Salma Crump, MSJMC's Marketing & Communications Manager. “This initiative has caused quite a stir (a good stir) in the hospital. It just took on a life of its own. The patients and staff just ran with it.”

She continued, “Overall we got just under 300 votes, and any one of our finalists could have been the winner because they are all great nurses. Nurse Francis is a rock star and is well respected throughout the hospital. One of the things I’m hopeful for with this initiative is that it will help to further highlight nursing as a rewarding profession. I want to thank everyone who voted.”

The lucky voter who will attend the luncheon is Tricia James.

Activities celebrating International Nurses Day will end with a Spa Day on May 13, when a temporary setup at the hospital will cater for the nurses on shift. The event is being sponsored by Touch Therapies.

Bias i dont agree with your rational as to which area should have been looked at in this event.tHE POLL WAS TAKEN BY THE COMMUNITY, MEDICAL COLLEAGUES, PATIENTS AND RELATIVES!! The contest was for ALL nurses who worked at MSJMC! I think the Nurses did not show much interest in getting nominating from their patients. U have scores of visitors to the #rd and $th floor twice a day to see their relatives; and you all should have impress and encorage them to nominate the best nurse from your ward. The Nurses in ER and Radiology went out and remind their patients about the contest and copied more forms to distribute to those who wanted to vote. Thats why they were in the final!! If you say there were not enough forms and physical promotions viz; flyers or poster; then I would go with you on that. Anyway, Nurse Mc Bert Arthur was my favorite Nurse. He was my midwife for 2 of my children> CONGRATS Bro.Arthur

BIAS

I AGREE THAT NURSE FRANCIS IS A GENUINE NURSE BUT I FIND THIS POLL TAKEN WAS BIASED...MOST OF THE NURSES LEADING ARE ON THE MAIN FLOOR, WHERE MOST OF THE INVESTIGATIONS ARE DONE: WHETHER IT B ER, RADIOLOGY! AND THIS IS ONLY 1 FLOOR....WAT ABOUT THE OTHER NURSES ON THE OTHER FLOORS, THERE IS LESS TRAFFIC THAN CASUALTY AND THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WEN THE POLLS WERE IN! THESE NURSES ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT LESS BUT DO A REAT JOB! MSJMC IS JUS TRYING 2 SHOW SOME APPRECIATION, BUT IS IT THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS CUZ THERE WAS NOT MUCH THOUGHT ! MAYB NEXT TIME ALL NURSE WILL B CONSIDERED N NURSE OF THE UNITS( like nurse of MS or nurse of pediatrics etc) WILL B DONE WHICH IS MORE FAIR
