New Medical Director Appointed

Dr Alvin EdwardsAntigua St. John's - Dr Alvin Edwards, an ophthalmologist at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre, has been appointed its new medical director.

In this new position, Dr Edwards, in addition to his regular specialist duties, is now responsible for managing the physicians in the hospital and working with the management team to continue to develop and implement standards of medical practice and patient care and support a positive patient experience in the hospital.

Speaking after his appointment, Dr Edwards said: “I’ve always enjoyed working at Mount St John’s and I feel well equipped to take on the role of medical director. I’m excited about the possibilities and I’m really looking forward to continuing the good work which has already started at the hospital. I want to build on those strengths to provide our community the best possible care we can give.”

He took over from Dr Dane Abbott, who served in the role for two years.

MSJMC CEO Sean DesChamps added: “I’m delighted to officially welcome Dr Edwards to the executive team as our new medical director. He has a wealth of experience, and has already proved to be a great asset since joining the organisation. We look forward to his professional leadership and management as we continue to develop the provision of safe, effective, and quality medical services within the hospital.”

He also thanked Dr Abbott for his significant contribution. Dr Abbott will continue to work as a consultant gynecologist at the hospital.

Apart from his work in healthcare, Dr Edwards has a wide interest in the arts and has written a few (unpublished) plays and acted on stage and in film. He is also the author of the book “Once in an Island”.
