Antigua St. John’s - According to international reports, on average, men live about five years less than their female counterparts. They also have a higher death rate for most of the leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and AIDS, and one in two men will develop cancer in their lifetime.
Men make half the number of visits to physicians as women do for prevention of disease.
With these facts in mind and recognising that men’s health is at risk, the American University of Antigua (AUA) has organised its first Men’s Health Day on Saturday July 7th, 2012, at the University’s main campus.
The Men's Health Day aims to increase the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
This day gives the University the opportunity to encourage males in the community to seek regular checkups, medical advice, and early treatment for disease and injury.
The lives of thousands of men will continue to be threatened unless immediate action is taken to combat this growing crisis. Therefore, wives with their husbands, fathers with their sons, and all men in general are invited to come and receive free health checks and screenings specific to men’s health.
Persons attending will be greeted by students and subsequently taken to various stations to be assessed and screened according to individual needs. Detailed educational information will be provided on Prostate Cancer, Erectile Dysfunction (ED), Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and testicular cancer.
