Rotary Stages Diabetic Foot Training Course

Dr.-Leslie-Walwyn-being-presented-with-Certificate-by-Dr.-Rhonda-Sealey-Thomas-and-Dr.-Kristien-Van-AckerAntigua St John's - The Rotary Club of Antigua, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Central Chester County in Pennsylvania, and the Rotary Club of Ledbury, United Kingdom, in conjunction with the International Diabetes Federation completed an advance step by step training course at the Mount St John's Medical Centre on Thursday March 29 and Friday March 30th, 2012.

The training was conducted by Vice Chair Diabetic Foot Programme of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Dr Kristien Van Acker, of Belgium, Dr Stephan Morbach from Germany, also of the IDF, and Podiatrist Simone Mc Connie of Barbados, also of the Federation.

The basic course was held last year in March, when 14 local doctor-and-nurse teams participated. This year, there were 12 teams who participated in the just-completed Advance Course on the total step-by-step training which was held at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre.

The international medical team was very impressed with the statistics which were compiled in the clinics over the past year since the basic course, and are confident that the diabetic patients in Antigua and Barbuda will benefit from the training in diabetic foot care presented to the local doctors and nurses.

The local doctors and nurses who participated in the training programme were presented with certificates of participation at a closing ceremony, reception, and dinner held at the City View Hotel on March 30.

The Goals & Objectives of this Step by Step Foot Project:

•    To create more awareness of diabetic foot problems in developing countries

•    To provide a sustainable training of health care professionals in the management of diabetic foot

•    To facilitate the cascading of information from health care professionals who have undergone training to other health care professionals and thus export expertise

•    To reduce the risk of lower limb complications in people with diabetes

•    To empower people with diabetes to care for their feet better, detect problems earlier and seek timely help when problems arise

Cordel E.A. Josiah MBE Past President of the Rotary Club of Antigua and Coordinator the Diabetic Foot Care Project thanked Dr Rhonda Sealy-Thomas the Chief Medical Officer, the Ministry of Health, and her staff, for allowing the doctors and nurses to participate in the training programme.

They also thanked Juanita James, president of the Antigua Diabetes Association, for its participation. Thanks also went to Dr Fraser of the American University of Antigua (AUA).

John Greedy of the Rotary Club of Ledbury, UK, and Dr Vasanth Prabhu of the Rotary Club of Central Chester County in Philadelphia, USA were also in Antigua during the training period.
