Eating Right and Popping Probiotic Pills

Rambo in Cassada GardensI never had a weight problem until I turned 40. Being over 6 ft tall, everyone would tell me I could carry the 292 lbs I was pulling around daily. I have always worked out and exercised at least a few times per week, but as I got older, I started gaining around the midsection.

Being so handsome, I have never had a problem with the ladies, as they seem to just love the big man. After I broke my back on a training mission, however, my weight became a major issue and I sought every way known to man to get the belly off.

In my struggle to reduce the spare tyre, I joined a gym and started to eat less. This improved my weight a little, but it was a serious battle. I would come home at night hungry, and hit the fridge, and was getting up in the middle of the night to snack. I was going nowhere. I kept experimenting with all sorts of diets. You name it, I tried it. Then one day I was at a seminar about probiotics.

What are probiotics, you ask? Probiotics are defined as friendly micro-organisms that live in the intestinal tract in symbiotic relationships with humans and animals. In a healthy body, these beneficial bacteria compose most of the gut micro flora and efficiently protect digestive health. A lack of healthy intestinal flora is the result of the use of antibiotics, processed foods, and poor diet. People so affected often suffer from intestinal discomfort, yeast infections, Candida overgrowth, constipation, bloating, and weight gain. Reintroducing probiotics quickly normalizes digestive health, prevents infections, strengthens the immune system, and helps with weight loss.

Studies have found that the type of food you eat can affect the type of bacteria in your stomach in as little as 24 hours, which can make gaining weight easier and losing it harder. This means even if you normally eat nothing but salads, one junk food binge may cause a serious shift in your body, making it easier to pack on the pounds. What does all of this mean? It further substantiates the importance of a healthy diet every day.

Now, I eat more vegetables, especially okras. Sometimes I would eat a whole pound and add broccoli and other vegetables like pumpkin and squash. I even mix red sweet potato and white sweet potato with black beans, or chunks of young green bananas topped with cilantro for flavour. I am always looking for ways to combine vegetables and season them. Broccoli slivers are crunchy and can be substituted for rice and make a great base for a really nice soup. All that, and a steam fish on top make a nice lunch. And If I am in Antigua, I stop at Rambo in Cassada Gardens. On a Saturday, night no one can beat Rambo’s steam fish with either spinach or okras or both.

As I struggled to lose the weight, bouncing up and down and every which way, I decided to try probiotics not for weight loss, but to keep me healthy, protect me from disease, and build my immune system. The key to staying thin seems to be avoiding the junk, and behaviour modification, ie learning how to eat all over again.

A few years ago, I spent about six months in Antigua, and I noticed a lot of amputees. Diabetes was everywhere. I investigated, and believe I have found the problem - bread, butter and cheese... and let’s not forget sausage, a real killer (nothing but flavoured fat) and nobody love more rice pudding (blood pudding) than me.

Today, I have cut back on eating rice, and eliminated anything made with bleached white flour. Last year. I only consumed about two lbs of sugar and plan to use no more than a half of pound this year. The truth is we need to totally eliminate sugar in our diet. By 2012, I plan to do just that.

In addition to diet, fat-causing stomach bacteria can also be increased by stress and lack of sleep. Probiotics have a lot of potential to impact our health in many areas. Research is still new and emerging, but we do know that probiotics support healthy balanced digestion.

Last year on Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was in Antigua and missed that big feast I grew accustomed to in America. That seems to have jump started my weight loss. When I got back, l decided to purchase Culturelle, an over-the-counter form of probiotic. Each capsules contains 10 billion units of good bacteria. I have been taking 20 billion units per day for the last two weeks, and this morning I weighed in at 248 lbs, down from 292, and have lost about 10 of it in the last two weeks. On top of that, I feel fantastic. I feel 20 years younger, and now I’m not only the most handsome man to ever come out of Antigua, but I’m leaner, more relaxed, and clear headed.

I will be back for Valentine's Day, so gentlemen hide your women, because Skyefather soon come. (Not kidding.) In the past few days, I have been dropping about a half a pound a day, and I have not exercised since I came back on New Year's Day. I have started posting my weight on the wall at work. My co-workers stopped laughing about a week ago. Some of them have started saving my lunch money.

I believe this new revelation is fascinating, and I just wanted to share it.

“Don’t just tell the world, show the world.”

Just so you know, if you can actually show that saying "positive words" to water affects how it crystallizes (as is the claim in the earlier link you posted), there is a man in Florida by the name of James Randi whom you ought to contact. Mr. Randi has, for the last 30 years or so, had a standing offer of $1,000,000 USD for anyone who can show evidence, under proper experimental conditions, of any supernatural phenomenon. These water claims would certainly qualify. Interestingly, over more than 30 years, no one has ever been able to claim the prize, since every claim tested (hundreds) fails, even though the person making the claim is allowed to design the experiment. Good luck.

If you want to know how water behaves, pick up a physics textbook and a general chemistry text book; it's all in there.

I'm not clear as to what, exactly, you want to bet on; that you CAN post more videos about the magical properties of water? There's no doubt in my mind that you can. The question is, will they actually serve as proof of anything? Homeopaths have been making absurd, unsupported, and outright experimentally refuted claims about water for centuries. The only reason their claims continue is that they can legally get away with it; there is no regulatory body to insist that what the homeopaths claim is true. They have lots of "information" floating around the web, but its mere existence on the internet does not make a claim true.

I have to ask: you continue to refer to your group and your work. Are you, by any chance, involved with the marketing/sales of these probiotic pills you so boldly extoll?

Did you know that there are different 'types' of water? spring water has all kinds of minerals and other things in it. People who add things to their water are trying to 'make' spring water, bottle it and sell it as such. Then you have water which has been put the reverse osmosis system and then you have water which has been desalinated and made into non salty water so that we can drink it, or use it in our homes, or water our garden with it. Any water that has ANY TASTE AT ALL has had something added to it or has come from a spring. Then you have the people who collect rain water in their cistern or tank and boil it to kill the bacteria, this also has a particular taste because it is not 100% 'clean'. The best water to drink, in my opinion, is the one that is just that, water, no additives, no minerals from the ground, no dirt, no nothing. Reverse osmosis is the way to go. Next time you're at any supermarket in Antigua that has a good selection of bottled waters, read the back label. In my research, the ONLY water bottled in Antigua that has nearly nothing in it (Total Dissolved Solids is

I am being to hard on you for a reason. help you out for what? this is not a major issue for me. maybe you should just do your own research. You would learn for yourself and maybe write an article on it. I see you practice psychology also. I ask my co worker to get me the zip drive that contain this file and would share it only if Carib arena can publish it and share with more than just you. Now If you want to hire me to do the research for you and this is what I do for a living, you can. Check up front cause you are an Antiguan and I have a 4 hour minimum. . I mus say i do like a challenge but right now i'm busy and got priorities

First you tried to discredit the probiotics issue which was just a simply discovery I wanted to share and the someon asked what I drink and I said water. I mad a statement but I never said We were going to discuss water. Now if you want to investigate water, do it. I got now over 100 people either writing me or calling me and tellime me it working for them which is amazing to me because I bumped into this thing. I said a group of us was looking at a vedio not the one on the net you looked at. but by the same person. this vedio was taken down due to copy right issues. The vedio was at least 30 minutes and it was detailed and very interesting. That's it. You are just like those peole in parliment always want to show how big your is but if i pull out mine you will have to pay to see it. I dont fall for the simple, go take a nap.

Please post some links on the Russian yogurt research. All I've been able to find is a Dannon ad campaign, not real research.

You posted a video about prayers and snow flakes when asked for evidence to support your claims about boiling water altering its "cels" (sic), now you are telling me to do my own research. I have. Over several years. There is no foundation for any of the claims you are making about water. You are making supernatural claims without offering any supporting evidence. Please give me some links to look at which support your claims, since your claims about the nature of water are quite arbitrary and unsupported by actual science, it is impossible for me to know where to look for valid research. Help me out a bit here.

I told you that the person who lead the group is not at work today. i just gave you a way to do your own research Unless You pay my $325 an hour a 4 hour minimum you got the email or go do some research for yourself and stop antagonizing me. @ morris yep yogurt do not enough probiotics to work at the same pace as if your buy the pills that comes in various units of good bactiria. @ my way of helping, that is correct. pipes, even, the hight of the waterfall, anthing that put stress on water changes it on some level.

PS @ PFKNR, USD please - What your man wife name?

I agree with you about the benefits of probiotics, but would advise against using Dannon's Activia yogurt as an example, because they settled a US$35 million class action lawsuit against them in 2008 for false advertising about the benefits of probiotics in their yogurt vs. other brands. They have since changed their ads and omitted the claim.

Just watched your "water research" video. Sweet Jesus man; I don't know where to begin.
1.) that is not research. That is a guy posting words followed by pictures of water crystals. There is no experimental procedure outlined, there is no independent confirmation of his findings (whatever they may be), there's nothing which can be replicated. How can an adult be persuaded by such a vapid show of pointlessness?
2.) The physical nature of water is well defined and REAL experimentation over several hundreds of years directly refutes your assertions. The video is nonsense.
3.) Yes, yogurt has active cultures. So what? How does that in any way validate your health claims about said cultures? It is a non sequitur; the mere existence of yogurt says nothing about it's health benefits.

I have seen a documentary about water and your statement seem to be correct about putting water under a lot of stress would decrease some of its properties (its benefits). I remember the man said they had to add back some sulphur and some other elements because of the process which the water undergoes.

I think it was national geographic and this man was bottling water directly from an underground spring. I am not sure if he was talking about the molecular make up of the water but i know he said because of processing his competitors had to add back all those elements that usually comes in pure water back into it. while his spring water had them all in naturally. They even showed them adding the things (iron, sulphur and a few more) things back into the water. but i think the molecular make up stays the same, just the additional elements which accompany good water are lost, so both of you seem to be right according to the documentary on national geographic on netflix.

Thank you for your kind consideration. probiotics was a discovery for me. 70% of the immune system is in the stomach. You are full of bad bacteria that help fat grow. You also have good bacteria to fight the bad. If you had to fight an army that had a million soldiers, how many soldiers would you take to the fight? 2 million? so if your body have more good than bad then guess who wins?

You are absolutley wron on that I will send the link to the water research in a few minutes and on Probiotic. have you seen the ACTIVIA ADDS on TV what you think is in Yogurt? active cultures! Active cultures are live bactiria. Remember when they did research on Russians who ate yogurt and where living longer? My group found the research on water on the web. I stopped for a minute so I could knock your relpy out of the park but the manager who lead the group discussion is not in today but ill get it for you. In fact scientists had seperate beeker with water in used sounds and ever negativ words for some and positive words and sounds at the water the one with the negative molecules turned black when looked at under a microscope. Google water experiments. You do some research and prove me wrong. every thing on this planet has atoms and mass that changes.

...Just stick with it; the body is an amazing creation. If you keep your mind focused, your body will adapt, I absolutely guarantee it. (This is a message to anyone reading this!) I would throw up now if I tried to eat the portions I used to eat a few years ago like it was nothing. And more than anything, I love the newfound energy. We as a people are so fixated on food; it is fool's gold. My friends, in their mindstate, they swear I must be unhappy with that amount of food. But the energy I have now feels 50 times better than the food I used to stuff myself with. I wish more people would understand this, but they never know until they get here. I certainly didn't. Keep up the work, it will keep paying off!

Good stuff. Like you I started packing on pounds a few years ago; at 5'10" I was up to 210 lbs, and an incident pushed me to get serious about taking it off. I figured (33 yrs old at the time) that I was at a crossroads in life whereas my weight was concerned. Similarly, I cut down/out rice, breads, and other starches, and slowly reduced my portions. It was hard at first, and you do feel hungry, but like you said it's behaviour modification. Your body WILL eventually get used to the smaller portions; you just have to be dedicated to seeing it thru.

I also started running, more serious than ever in life before then. I'm now at 170 for the past couple years, and at 38 I would far outpace myself at any other age. I'm now up to 10 miles running when I train regularly....

"Research show that what you do to water. i.e boil will change the mulecular structure of its cels so keep you water harasment free and drink it pure as possible"

Umm, I'd love to see that research. Water is a simple molecule, it is not comprised of cells. Boiling pure water does nothing to change its molecular structure, only the average speed at which the molecules are moving. After it cools down, it is impossible to tell boiled water apart from water which has not been boiled.

You may want to hold back on the probiotic testimonials and promises of good health. Most of the claims of probiotics are based on very limited experimental data and unfounded extrapolation. The article you link to is very limited in its scope and looks at a very small sample size, so drawing any conclusions on the findings is a bit premature. I hope the hype about probiotics is warranted, but like most forms of "alternative medicine", I think we'll find over time that they are not all that remarkable.
