Antigua St John's - Recycling has become a buzz-word again in schools across Antigua. The Antigua and Barbuda Waste Recycling Corporation (ABWREC), in collaboration with the Environment Division, has launched its Inter-Schools Recycling Competition 2012 from January 9 to May 22.
Environment Education Officer Arica Hill said, “The school year 2009/2010 saw some real competitiveness between the schools. Some schools got their communities involved, and were able to collect several thousands of pounds of recyclable material. Truly amazing feats considering that they were just bottles.”
ABWREC encouraged all the schools to actively participate in this competition by collecting a wide range of materials. Participating schools are asked to be very careful in their collection of recyclables by doing the following:
- Ensure that bottles have no liquids
- Separate the bottles from the caps and place in separate bags
- Clean all tins (sardines, tuna etc)
- Label the bags with the school's name
