Antigua St John's - The nation’s 17 district disaster co-ordinators, some of whom have served for over 20 years, were recognised during a ceremony Thursday evening at the Methodist Conference Hall at Scotts Hill.
The district disaster co-ordinators, responsible for disaster management in the communities, offer their services voluntarily through the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS).
Of the 17 individuals, five have been involved in the work for over 20 years.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Edson Joseph spoke on behalf of Minister of Health and Social Transformation Wilmoth Daniel. He commended the district disaster co-ordinators for their tremendous effort over the years, noting that community work is not an easy task.
Director of NODS Philmore Mullin said his department will continue to build capacity. He further spoke of the need for Antigua and Barbuda to embrace disaster management in its four components – preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
